ok, so i'm about to built my ld9 with the 086 head and was wondering what to do with the water holes on my cometic mls headgasket.
when i compare it to the felpro gasket, the holes on the cometic one are alot smaler.
Should i open them up if so how do i go about opening up holes on this kind of gasjet?
I heard that this head is notorious for cracking and dont want it to overheat.
here is a picture of the difference between the felpro and the cometic:
some holes are smaller and the one at the top are at a different place.
the machine shop said that i should just let it like that because the water flow more from one side to the other side of the engine and not as much from block to head via these holes.
but i remember reading here that someone installed the head and it cracked because of overheating, but i'm not sure why or if its because of the holes too small.
thanx for any help.
I've never done the swap... but seeing that.... and the holes that don't line up at all, which I'm assuming you've machined the head or the block to line them up.....
I would take a big punch and expand the holes.
Take it with a grain of salt... I've never done it, and there's few on here that have. You might want to try www.quad4forums.com
man... i dunno what to do now!!! if the ring of the gasket are a bit smaller than the head, will i be allright as long as the fire ring is not COMPLETLY into the head circumference?
its like 1mm at some place, but not all around.
thanx
imo, if there is any part of the fire ring that is exposed (hanging over either the combustion chamber in the head or the cylender sleeve) that is just a disaster waiting to happen, wont take long for that to melt off causing a possible blown headgasket. not saying it will, but its a definate possiblity....
why are you using the mls gasket... and about the holes how do they line up with the block? match it to the block and then see where you stand when it comes time to put the head on.

i want to use the cometic gasket because its a good gasket.....
it does already match the block, except that the water holes are very small on the cometic. i dunno why they made water holes that small.
i might just go with a victor headgasket.
victor?
Remember....syringes go in the RED waste basket.
Victor Reinz. You could go with a Fel-pro too. It's one of the best.

I ordered mine right from cometic. I recieved it in 4 days and the price was less then jtuners (not by much but it was cheaper).
