Im jsut curious as to how big people have gone on there piping for exhaust... i no a buddy of mine went 3'' dual straight on his eclipse and got a est. 40 hp+......just curious if anyone has tried using 3'' exhaust piping (doesnt have to be dual or straight) and how do u think it would sound if i did use 3''?

3 is too big for most, but your profile says you're planning on a turbo, so the 3 in is probably gonna be what you want...as far as sound, i wouldnt know maybe someone else can post a clip or somethin

2.25 is ideal
2.75 for boosted cars

Your buddy's Eclipse sounds like it was turbocharged. I used 2.5 on my 97 2.2 and got a bit better times (no boost/nitrous either) But 3" is going to be too big for sure.

The bigger the exhaust the better for turbo setups... You want it to be able to get that air out asap... Turbo Desiel trucks run up to 6" on the high end performance trucks... For N/A you don't want to go above 2.5" and as they said 2.25" is ideal...

Your buddy may have a 3" exhaust on his supercharged Eclipse, but first of all, if it was dual, it wasn't a true dual because the room isn't there. If it split at the rear section into dual 3" pipes, that hurt him more than anything. And second, there's NO exhaust for the Eclipse (or pretty much any car out there) that will give you a 40 hp gain, except in eBay claims. If he gained 5 hp, that'd be good on that car. You can't gain 40 hp on a 3G Eclipse with anything but boost or nitrous.

I should know. I have a 2001 Eclipse Spyder GT, with full exhaust (headers, high flow cat, and 2.75" exhaust). FYI, many people even with my car and a supercharger don't go above 2.75" unless they're pushing really high boost (12 psi +). So if he told you he gained 40 hp with his exhaust, and you're using that as part of your reasoning for going with a 3" exhaust, consider first that he's way off on that number, and second, that your engine really isn't big enough to need that diameter. Unless you're planning to push some really high boost yourself, I wouldn't go any higher than 2.75."

I'm sorry to go a little off topic but I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of this Eclipse and its engine bay.

But for the exhaust, just like everyone said, N/A - 2.25" MAX, Turbo - 2.5"+

these r some pics i got from his myspace... if i can get a hold of em i can ask some more info......(gettn a lil off topic lol) i wrote to him and am trying to find out if he can give me some more specs..

Well, from the first pic, he's still got the stock GT manifold. Most people swap that out for an equal length manifold before they get to higher boost on the 3G Eclipses. However it's not an absolute requirement. And yes indeed, I can see the supercharger in there as well. I'm hoping to have one of my own by next spring/early summer. It'd be nice to see pics of the exhaust though too, especially if he's got any under the car.

I'm not calling total BS on the setup because there's some people out there with some crazy money into cars...and I definitely know that the 3G Eclipse is NOT a cheap car to mod (...but 50 grand sounds like a bit much, unless you're counting the cost of the car with that).

However, yes, we're way off topic now.

lol yea....owell i startd the topic (sorry everyone) and the 50g was cost of car also...and to correct myself i think it was actually more like 20g motor and 10g body (idk im jsut a friend )

Ever heard of the 2.3 Ho??? TRS header itself made 22WHP more than stock.

I should have specified - I meant catback exhaust, not full exhaust (header/s and all). And that's another thing I was thinking too, if his buddy meant he gained 40 whp between headers and catback on his Eclipse, it's possible (I know I said it wasn't, only because about 4 out of 5 times full exhaust will gain no more than 20 whp). Still a stretch, but some people have gotten that much. 20-25 would be a lot more believable, but I don't know him or the car...

But yeah, what I should have said was that there's no catback exhaust for the Eclipse, or pretty much any other car either, that will give you a 40 hp gain.

it was catless........... i said it was just dual straight pipe and yes it was with new headers... so it was possible

3" is a tad on the big side for NA use, but my 2.4 is running great with it and still making lots of TQ 2.25 for NA, 2.5" built NA, SC, NOS, and low PSI turbo, 3" for high psi turbo
