Exhaust tip size

I searched and found a thread that helped a little. Basically I have access to a compression pipe bender so I am going to build my own cat-back. I obviously can't build my own muffler so I was just going to get one of the eBay specials, and I found a 2.25" inlet muffler that I liked, but the 4.5" tip scared me a little. I don't want an exhaust so loud that I get pulled over every day and I don't want one that sounds whiny or screechy. I just want a deep tone. Tell me, does the tip of the muffler change the sound at all?

I was also considering picking up a glass-pack resonator, will that help the sound at all? Thanks.

Tim

The size of the tip shouldn't really change the sound of the exhaust much - and if a larger diameter tip did affect the tone of the exhaust, it would tend to make it lower sounding. However I'd rethink the eBay special muffler - you have no way of knowing what kind of build quality you're really getting with one of those, not to mention that most of them probably do little to nothing to dampen the sound, so you could very well be better off just putting a coffee can back there. I'd look for a name brand on eBay to save a little $$ over buying one from a place like Summit (although prices at Summit are generally pretty close to those on eBay anyways). You should be able to find a Magnaflow or another name brand that won't break the bank. Personally if I was building custom, I'd look at a Borla muffler because their exhausts sound great, but their mufflers are also nearly the cost of some catbacks you can buy...

And the glass pack resonator, from what others have experienced, should help to give you the lower, deeper sound you're looking for.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will look for a name brand muffler. I'm in no rush. How is this for a glass pack resonator?

Or is there a site that you know of that sells them cheap. Thanks

Look like the Thrush resonators.
Just slightly lower price.

You shouldbe ok with it.

I replaced my stock resonator with the cherry bomb and it works fine. I also have dual magnaflow mufflers and 2.25 piping with a Magnaflow cat. If your looking for a deep tone this one way to go.

It's NOT a Thrush glasspack, it's a FLOWTECH Red Hot. That's not the same. The Flowtech has louvered core and the Thrush have a perforated core without louvers. The louvered one will create more turbulence to the flow and that's not good. Most people here are going with the THRUSH glasspack.
