ecotec intake manifold

i am currently designing an intake manifold for the ecotec motor and was wondering if there is a bolt pattern for the intake manifold flange out there anywhere?

Take your manifold off and measure it

GM does, part # 88958633 its the ECOTEC intake manifold flange and its designed so you can fabricate your own intake useing it as a base.

are there any existing after market intake manifolds for the ecotec that are not plastic like the stock ones?

Yes. Venom makes an aluminum intake thats a direct replacement for our stock ones, they claim 10 to 15 hp increases in power out put. Now the bad news, they go for about a grand ! Yup thats right, for 1thousand US dollers you too can add 10 hp to your car !

MORONS! I don't think they've ever sold one at all at that price!

1000 dollars??

i saw that site... they also have a 9000 dollar fuel rail......

thats absolutely ridiculous.... i could pay off an aveo for that much

depending on how this goes, i might make more if people want them, they would only be like 400ish max.

Scroll style or log style?

depends on the use.

scroll, which is basically what the stock mani is now, would GENERALLY be better for a street n/a application because you can keep the runners longer to give better midrange torque, whereas a log style would be better for high boost and, if the plenum is sized properly and the runners the correct length (preferable with internal velocity stacks at each runner) can be good for high rpm N/A applications, but serious research and development would need to be done to get the runner lengths and plenum volume just right so that you don't lose power instead of gain it.

Then of course, there are also dual-plane or dual-plenum manifolds like the ones used on rally cars that have a cone-shaped air distribution plenum that ensures that every cylinder gets equal airflow.

Intake manifold design is a lot more than just welding up some aluminum, you need to do a lot of testing to see how and where it will change the power band. Too big of a volume with too short of a runner, and you'll have increased lag and a very peaky powerband. Too small of a plenum, and too long of a runner, and you can pull stumps, but forget about racing. There is a TON of science that goes into making a manifold, or at least a good one. Sure, you can do trial and error and hit or miss, but in the end fabbing an intake manifold that fits perfectly is a hard enough job in itself, much less making it fit into a given space and still provide the best possible gains.

no doubt to what scarab said. i am currently doing research on what runner / plenum size will be best for what i am looking for. personally, out of the ecotec, i am looking to get a little more top end. but yes i know that not every manifold you could build for any engine is going to yield more power. and for right now this manifold is just for me, i would never start selling a manifold, even if it looks sweet inless i know that it yields more power.

is there any intake for any car from any year that has a metal intake manifold that i can get pnp that fits my 05 ecotec with no modification?

The turboed Saab's with the ECOTEC have an aluminum intake that fit our cars.

with the manifold above, dont you have to use some sort of gasket? and if so, is there a PN?

Re: ecotec intake manifold

when you are designing that I would start out with the same length runners as stock, mabey 1/2" shorter max and concentrate on adding runner volume. but not to much just go a little at a time and keep testing it.

I think a little more volume would compliment most heads/cam guysand offer an increase for the boost guys too

theres also another intake theory. runners tuned to just the right length can have a charging effect on the back of the intake valve at the right rpm. in other words, if you get the length just right you can get the runners to flow at over 100% ve at a specific rpm. what happens is when the intake valve opens and pulles in air a vaccume is created in the runner between the back of the valve and the the plenum. when the valve closes air will rush in from the plenum to fill that void. this air has a certain amount of momentum to it. if you can tune the length of the runner so that at a specifc rpm the intake valve is opening just as the air is rushing back through the runner the air will not hit the back of a closed valve but charge directly into the cylander. becouse you are using a combination of the cylander sucking in the air and the air already in motion trying to fill the void caused by the last cycle you can get much more air in the cylander than you would otherwise. but the rpm window this works in is completely dependant on the lenght of the runner.

many manufacturers use this theory in designing thier intake manifolds. one of the best examples of this is on the late 80's gm TPI (tuned port injection)motors.

Goto Napa or Bat and ask for the intake mani gasket for a 04 Saab 9-3.

Also, you need to drill and tap a hole for our break booster and figgure out a way to attach our TB (3 outta 4 of the bolt holes line up, the 4th bolt would actually go into the #2 runner). And no, converting the Saab TB, is not really an option.

yea i wasn't planning on using the saab TB because it is probably electric. here is a pic of the ecotec intake mani
thanks for the info on the 9-3 gasket, ill check it out see what it looks like
