so yeah this past weekend i did the mani swap i had been collecting parts for. Its still pretty ghetto, i need to clean some things up. but its works, no CEL. props to Phillip Herman (philioz24) for the design (which i copied) and my dad for helping machine the parts.
can painted.....hell yes
like i said me and my dad machined this to fit upside down
well there it is.. it works no CEL.
But i do have a few questions to those who have done this swap.
with this manifold the engine make a deeper sound when reving. but under that noise there is like a slight whistle noise. at first i thought it was a vaccum leak or something. so i checked everthing out, and the noise is comeing from inside the intake tube. so it sounds like its comeing from the throttle body or something, maby even further up. any ideas?
I thought that if it was a vacume leak that the engine wouldnt run right, it runs but when you give it too much gas it sounds like it is bogging down, i cant tell if its the new sound of the engine or, actuly bogging. theres still power when you give it alot of gas, its just weird. Any way any ideas would be nice.
looks good.
how u got it hooked up into the manifold?
Yes, I too am interested on how you got it to fit. Did you shave down one of the sides of the connector piece or what?

"Kneel before ZOD!!!"
there was an exsisting plug on the drivers side of the manifold that I had. i put a 90degree brass fitting in it and made it face the EGR, then connected them with a hose

How did you bolt the mani up to the head?
R u using the 2.3L intake mani gasket?
Sounds like you have a leak.
If so, you may need another one.
I had that problem with my auto, the mani was not touching fully on one side even though it looked like it.
I got the very loud whistle noise, and the rev needle jumping thing folks get.
I doubled up on the gaskets and everything worked nice.

I used the fontana adapter flange and had a 2.3 mani gasket on each side of it when i put it on the head. also with the engine running i misted starting fluid around where the manifold hits the head to see is there where any leaks andthe engine didnt react so i assume there are no leaks there.
The whistle noise i get is not loud, you have to listen carfully. It only sounds slightly when you first tounch the gas, or when i shift and get back on the gas.
I also found that my brake booster line is pinching itself closed, i dont know if it is related or not.
Jake wrote:what kinda hose.
I think it was like 14" of 1/2" heater type hose

Ok,
Well, definately unkink the brake booster line then.
Using the Fontana flange, thats cool.
But if you're using a larger tb, you'll get the hissing noise.
Should die down when you're driving. Or at least lessen.
But its always gonna be there. It does that for lager tbs for some reason.
As long as you're not getting the rev jumping you shouldbe ok.
EGR stuff I don't know I never had to mess with it.

yeah i guess your right it does sound more like a hiss than a whistle.
but not really sure what rev jumping is,
my RPM's follow my throttle exactly unless you floor it, then it bogs.

The rev jumping would have happened right away if the install didn't go correctly.
Basically, even with the car in park, you hit the gas, get up to about 3K,
THen when you let off, the needle would jump from like 800 rpm to 1500 rpm, ,then die down.
A lot of people were getting that including me at the time.
As for the boging down, have no idea why that is.
Everything else sounds fine.

Looks good... what kind of 'HEATER' hose? and where can I find em?
Mastin wrote:As for the boging down, have no idea why that is.

all I need to do is figure the bogging out and i will be happy with the swap.

umm well.... I went into my local autoparts store, (it wasn't like autozone or advanced auto parts) and said I needed some 1/2" hose that I could run next to the block not wouldn't melt.

the heater hose wont last long , the exhaust is to hot and well destroy the hose
exhaust temps are close to 400-1000 coming through the egr depending on condidtions
The hose runs right up against the manifold and is like 5-6" away from the block.
but i will keep an eye on it anyways thanks, ( I bought like 3 foot to much anyway)

I was just curious where u got the hose cuz i was pretty sure it'll melt or break cuz the exhaust gets too hot. The rest of the mods I was pretty impressed with. I just dont understand why you flipped it over... it wouldn't fit stock style?
the hose will burn from the inside out , not outside in
lol...... heater hose for exhaust
cool idea to get it to fit, but your going to need something better........ think more along the lines of the stock tube.
Double check your vac. lines for that Bog issue....... could be that you have the Evap Purge going to the manifold instead of the Throttle body. Its hard to tell, but it looks like it in the pic. (everything is black, so even harder to tell in a small pic)

Hey I was wondering if you could make me one of those? I'm getting ready to swap out for the HO parts and I want to keep my EGR. The number one thing that I hate is lights on my dash and seeing my CEL and ETS light on will drive me nuts. How much do you want if I had you make me one? I'm willing to pay a reasonable price.

My car has two speeds, fast and faster.
so last night i did some tinkering and i fixed the whole bogging issue I had.
when i first did the swap I used the 2.3 TB with all of the 2.3 sensors. after reading people bitching up and down that "you use 2.3 sensors with a 2.3 TB, and 2.4 sensors with a 2.4 TB"
So after reading a few posts about other people mani swap problems, i decided to switch my
2.3 TPS to a 2.4 TPS and now it works perfect.
now im just saying it worked in my case, I have the 56mm TB of a 95' sunfire gt, It is so compareable to the stock 2.4TB that its not funny, the TPS bolt hole pattern is the same as the 2.4(even though the TPS's have different part numbers), the vacuum ports are same as the 2.4 and the throttle cable wheel is the same. I had to take a pair of calipers to verify the 56mm.
I just thought that was funny

I bet it had the nipple for cruise control too.
But yeah, those versions of the 2.3L tbs as THEE ones to get.
Got one right next to me as I type this.
There is another version very similar, but like you said with the older style tps on there.
Congrats on the fix.
Have fun.

so i took off that hose while I was fixing things and looked inside of it. It didnt look mealted or deformed or anything. I see what you mean with the hose melting from the inside, but i will eventualy replace the hose with tube plumming.

yeah it does have have the cruise nipple, good thing i grabbed this one at the junkyard.

Nice... am keeping my eye on this thread.
could someone tell me in pain english how the HO manifold is better than the plastic intake manifold?
~1996 Cavalier LS 2.4L (auto)
It looks "cooler"
Larger runners and plenum. But some have dyno'ed the manifold and lost HP (on a basically stock engine).
July 2006... huh
OK i just skimmed through all the replies so sorry if this problem has been solved.
The "whistle" you describe sounds like the one my buddies 96' Formula WS-6 Ram Air. All his whistle is the sound of the air gettin pulled through the intake. So im willing to bet yours is doing the same thing.
