Oil pressure gauge hooked up but not working??
Monday, August 14, 2006 12:51 PM
Ok, so this might have been stupid but I took off the stock oil pressure sensor on the cam tower and installed an aftermarket one. I heard somewhere on here that the sensor in the cam tower was just for the idiot light on the gauge cluster, so I thought I didnt need it. Got everything hooked up the way its supposed to and I get no reading at all. No leaks, cranked the car without the idi cover on it to see if I had any. Then put the idi cover back on and started the car. No reading. Checked for leaks again while it was running and nothing. I have the wire going from the sender to the gauge and everything is hooked up right on the gauge. I'm stumped. Give me some ideas on what could be wrong guys.

I wana say that you can't use that spot because the stock sensor only measures if it's enough pressure, not the actual amount of pressure. So maybe that has something to do with it.

but I thought that when the motor was cold the oil pressure would be close to 100, then when it warms up it would drop down???? Maybe I'm remembering things wrong....

I might just have to get it up in the air and do it on the back of the block.

I'd wait for someone else to chime in cause that was just a guess.

If you have TO much teflon tape on it, and it is not getting a good ground it will not read at all.
My 2 cents...

hmm....ok so when I turn the gauge light on the needle jumps a TINY bit....but no luck on fixing it yet....I'll have to mess around with it tomorrow...

ok so i re-did the teflon and put only one wrap around every thread, made sure I have a good ground by the sender and it still doesnt work. let me clarify something tho, you CAN get a oil pressure reading from the cam tower correct? maybe I just got a bad gauge/sender.

Yes Mat, thats where most people have their gauge hooked up.. Thats where im putting my electrical gauge at. If I were you id leave the stock sender in there.. Try that and see if thats your problem before you go replacing your sender.

ok so does the sender itself have to be grounded?? cause right now I have just the aftermarket sender hooked up. I have the nylon line about 8" and then the sender zip tied to my strut brace. do I have to ground the sender somehow? cause it usually is when you tee off cause its connected directly to the head. im still sooo confused lol...

the sender grounds itself when you screw it in... thats why they said how much teflon tape are you using, because if you put to much then all of the tape will not allow the sender to have a good direct connection to the head/ground...

my oil pressure gauge is not working either... when i turn on my car it jumps to 50psi and then it falls off to like 20 for ever.... the last possibility i have is that the sender its self it not grounding correctly... i have gone through about 5 senders and 5 gauges... so im passed thinking its a hardware issue....

post up your progress, could help me and others out, good luck

ive read close to 100 psi off the cam tower

im guessing your missing a ground some where

you ran a oil line in your car?

braided stainless is your friend when you run any hot lines into your cabin...

ok so this makes sooooo much more sense now. Since I dont have it directly screwed into the cam tower the sender is not grounding. So i will be going to lowes tomorrow sometime and getting the correct fitings to tee off the stock sensor and the aftermarket sender. Wish me luck lol....

yay it works now!!!

so i had never used an electrical gauge before so i didnt know what was up with them....got the right fittings and did the tee....man it bled even after being off all night!!! but got everything hooked up and no leaks oil pressure is about 25psi at operating temp...so i have just 1 question now..

is the oil pressure RPM or TPS dependant?

It should be rpm related which technically is still related to tps because the more you open the tps the higher the engine rpms go.

the oil pressure is rom dependent. for instance on mine the oil pressure usually doubles what the rpms are.. roughly. when it first starts up its around 90 psi and the after a bit of driving mine sits right about 20 psi. but then again im using a mechanical with stainless steel braided line.

Om you do not have to have the stock sending unit in. I do not. It is only for the idoit light, and by the time that comes on your already in trouble.

hmm ok i got it....mine sits at about 75psi on a cold startup and when it warms up all the way it sits at about 24psi....I've noticed that the oil pressure does not drop nearing redline, atleast nothing noticable....and I thought it did on the 2.4 cause of the sh!tty oiling system...lol

I have never seen that either, but some will say with a full swipe gauge you will see it. What are you getting at WOT once warm? Do you have a oil temp gauge as well?
