What should I get...?
Tuesday, August 15, 2006 12:47 PM
I've got about $350 that I can spend right now on somethin' for the car that I don't have to put to my wedding fund, lol... (It's my b-day so I'm treating myself to something for once) What should I get? My car is pretty much stock. What would be a good mod or mods within that budget? I was thinking about a cold air intake but I'm not sure which one would be the best choice to buy? Would a cold air intake really make that much of a difference or would itonly make my engine bay look better? Friend of mine says that cold air intakes are just a waste of money. Other things I thought about were maybe a new car stereo, f1 fenders (I can paint them myself so I don't have to take them to a shop), I've been really wanting to get a bigger exhaust done up, but I'm not sure how much it would cost. If I went with the bigger exhaust do I have to start with a header and cat or can I just get a fatter exhaust done from the stock manifold and cat? I don't think I can afford to get a header, highflow cat, and dual exhaust setup with $350. If I could get a fatter catback first and then get a header and cat later on that would be great. Excuse me if this question is stupid but I don't know squat about exhaust systems. Any info would greatly be appreciated.

for me
header=200
cat=50
piping=free
muffler=100
so i got my WHOLE exhaust done for 350....if you have the hookups then you can get it done possibly cheaper than that.

anything that makes your car flow better will help out....cold air, bigger exhuast (but not too big keep it under 2.5") so yea cai works good. also you could get motor mounts, throttle body, shift kit stuff like that...

I would get a Cold air intake and a cat-back exhaust system...

Are you going more towards performance or sex appeal?

I like a little bit of both, lol. I would like to beef up the performance a little bit, at least enough where I there's a noticible diference. I'm definitely going to do the intake, exhaust, trottle body, etc... but I'm not looking to spend the kind of money that it cost for a supercharger or turbo. (If I wasn't saving for a wedding I probably would get a turbo/supercharger) Well at least not on this car. I'm currently working on my GMC S-15 (nothing major), and I'm aiming to buy something that has a little more potential than a j-body and spend the money on that. It's going to be at least a year or two before I get a new car so for now I want to have fun with my car until I get something to replace it. Same goes for the looks of the car. I definitely want to get the rksport hood. I know it's not cheap but I think it looks so much better than the other options I've seen. Other than that I'd like to lower it a bit, fiberglass and paint the interior, get a body kit, and give it a custom paint job. Aside from the hood and kit, I can save money by painting it myself and stuff so I'm not too worried about that. I just want to make the car look nice, and make it a little faster where it's definitely noticible. For now... I only have $350, lol, until the wedding is over in May next year. After the wedding is over I can start spending more on my car again. So I want to get the best bang for my buck that I can get spending $350. What would be the best mod to spend this money on that would make the biggest difference on either the performance or the looks of the car within that price range? I basically only have this one shot so I wanna make the right decision. I'm lucky enough to be able to spend this much money on myself for my birthday, lol. I got offered some over time at work last weekend so it was perfect timing. My girl is cheap, lol, I get her a gold necklace last year for her birthday, for my birthday she gives me a Walmart car buffer... lol. So I decided my overtime money is going towards a gift for myself. Maybe around Christmas I might get lucky and work some overtime on the holidays and treat myself to something else again, but I'm not gonna count on it, lol... So yeah for now I have $350. What would you guys get if you were starting off and that's all you had? lol

If you go with a cold air intake, get an aem one. Other intakes are short ram intakes, which pulls air from the engine bay- thus hot air.

What is your ultimate plan for your car? After the wedding, do you seriously plan on adding boost? If so, then choose mods that will work with that system. IE: a CAI is not a good idea, because once you have boost you won't need it.

Are you wanting to go supercharger or turbo?

If turbo, then a header is pointless.

I'd suggest motor mounts, 2.5" cat back, shift kit (or if manual a short shifter)

You could also use that money towards suspension. Some strut tower bars, and sub frame brase.

Or upgrade your breaks. I have the powerslot rotors with Hawk pads, and they totally kick ass. Best mod I've done.
