Necessary to replace main bolts/studs ???
Wednesday, August 23, 2006 12:28 PM
Hello...

Im in the process of rebuilding my engine and I had placed an order for some ARP main studs- 2.4

The company was currently out of stock, and Im not sure on how long it would take for them to come in...

Can I safely re-use the factory bolts? The engine had 90k on it.

Thanks for any info.

I do not see why not, as long as they are torqued down properly.
You could always get stock replacements if you are worried about it.

no, because the stock head bolts are torque to yeild, which means they stretch.. best bet is go to napa and get new oem head bolts, cost ya like 30 bucks and use those until you get the arp's...but do not re use the stock ones

^^^^ never reuse those bolts unless they are the arp's. the arp's can be reused, all you have to do is measure them to make sure there not over stretched, but like he said never reuse factory head and main bolts.

Yeah....

They aren't head bolts- i have ARP replacements for them-- just the main bolts holding the crank in..

I will get replacements.

Thanks for the info.

Main bolt can be reused.

Head bolts CAN be reuse but it's not recommended.

Stock main bolts can NOT be reused. they are stretched out and are worthless. get some new bolts and save your time the aggrivation.

They CAN be reuse. How do I know? I BUILD engine. I don't talk out of my ass like you. They can be reuse plain and simple. I work for an engine building company. I build engine for the military and THEY were reusing them. Guys with alot more experience than you ARE REUSING IT.

i am in the military... and i am a mechanic... were not talking about a diesil engine here... were talking a bout a 4 cylinder a little different... so talking out of my ass im not... plain and simple, u torque them back down u have a 90% chance of them snapping. use your head, theres gonna be different grade bolts for 2 completely different sized engines..

no wonder why most of the vehicles that we have need to get torn down and rebuild all the time... yeah u guys reuse them on your end and they dont give you guys any problems, but once they come to us we have to fix your mistakes. so now that there isnt much for you to say u can just stop where your at. mine as well lock this thread up too because its gonna cause problems.. i see it already... damn civilians

No wonder the engine blow when I found all the crap you guys put in there. I found sticks, tools, loose bolts in the valley pan, ....

Also, if you guys would take care of your engine, it wouldn't blow.
