Whats next?
Wednesday, August 23, 2006 6:32 PM
Well it's been almost 2 years since I have been on the forums so please forgive me Im not exactly up to date on what parts are available for the 95-99 2.2l ohv cavs. I didnt have any access to a computer or my cav while I was going through some training in the marine corps. Now that im driving again I want to go faster like everyone else. My goal is not to have a completely built engine or f/i. I currently have a cai, p&p intake manifold, header, exhaust(no cat), o2 sim, engine and trans poly mounts, roller rockers(not installed), g/c coilover w/ red konis. I have been considering getting a nitrous kit of some sort, sounds like nx is the favorite here so that will come later, but what other bolt ons should i purchase that will make a difference. I tried searching for stainless steel valve springs but couldnt find any info and mantapart or howell dont seem to sell them anymore. Does anyone sell the proper length pushrods for the cavs now besides gm? Thanks for any input.

pushrods, are not going to make you go any faster...and either will valve springs..

i'd say just get nitrous, you'll be happier

Is the rev limiter on this car controller by the ecu or is just valves floating that causes the limit to be hit? I was thinking the vavle springs would help raise the rev limit if its not ecu controlled. I need the pushrods for the roller rockers that im gonna install.

Is nitrous the next step, or should i build up the head a little, ie 1mm os vavles or is this just a waste of money?

the 1mm os valves would be a waste

why do you need pushrods for the rocker arms your using? which rockers are you using?

comp cams 1.6 but you cant use old rods i need at least new factory rods. I dont know enough about ohv heads to know what will be benefitiacl to the top end without going all out on a race head. I would like more than anything to just get better responsivness to the power i have, like the dohc engines get. i know I could get more power with a cam but its a pain to take these cams out and its gonna cost too much to take to a shop and have them do it.

lighten everything up....light parts move faster, respond quicker....

think of overweight offensive lineman vs small nimble running backs......nuff said.

if you need rocker arms, lightened aluminum, i'm selling mine in the classifieds...

about the rocker arms, are the howell rockers a better quality system than the comp cams? I realize they are aluminum so they will be lighter, but as far as hp and quality goes are they worth the switch? Are those rockers the same for the 96 2.2 ohv engine, I've noticed that howell specifies that they are for 98+ is the 96 head different? How about a lightened flywheel, would that make a significant difference in accelleration vs the stock steel one.

The rockers can be used on a '96, but you'll need to get the correct studs and remove the guide plates.

The Howell kit is a good kit, but the are other options , read this thread for more info.

Depending upon you cam, valve springs and pushrods will recover lost power from valve float and pushrod deflection. Crane Vams, Comp Cams and just about any other cam manufacturer can regrind a camshaft to suite your needs. Some can only grind a stock cam with the same intake centerline and lobe separation as the stock cam. If you can find a cam blank, you can get any profile your heart desires. Look into the cam companies' master cam profile catalog and look at their Small Block Chevy hydraulic roller profiles for lobe designs, the 2.2/2200s use the same lobe designs as the SBC. (remember to keep the valve lift limits of the valve train in mind, when ordering a cam.)

The following threads are long, but there is alot of good info found in the threads.

2200 power record
2200 valve springs

These threads may state 2200, but they also deal with the '97 & older 2.2Ls. There's a number of other threads posted throughout, but these are just a few that I had readily available to post.
