I have a 97 fire with the 2.4. I've blown well over $2000 in parts trying to correct a rough idle, nothing helped. Today just for giggles I cut a piece of sheet metal to sandwich between the EGR valve and the head. Now it idles smooth! The EGR was on the list of replaced parts, it was just over 200 bux.
I put the stock EGR valve back on, mostly to hold the block off plate in place and to reconnect to the harness so the system doesn't throw a code for a missing part.
So my question is this: What, if any, problems should I expect from doing this?
I searched and the only issues seem to be when the valve isn't connected or if the EGR sim isn't playing nice with the ecu.
Thanks!

Well, since they did away with EGR on the 2000+ ld9, I seriously doubt that you're going to hurt the motor by doing this. I'm even planning on disabling the EGR on my Fiero...
If you're worried about it though, some parts are bad right out of the box, it happens. See if you can't get an exchange on that one since it sounds like it's bad right away.
They're not realy important to running a motor though, all it does is allow some exhaust gases to be passed into the intake stream to lower the presence of Oxides of Nitrogen in the final exhaust of the car. It does this by lowering combustion chamber temps. It lowers combustion chamber temps because the exhaust doesn't have very much oxygen to burn, so you end up with a smaller amount of oxygen and fuel in the combustion chamber.
It doesn't negatively affect performance though, most of the time (IIRC) that it is allowing exhaust gas into the intake stream is when you are cruising (part throttle) and the engine is at full operating temp. (at least i'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work).

Sleeper style, they don't see it coming that way.
Thanks, Squisher. I don't know if the EGR is still under warranty but I'll try an exchange.

they actually make a plate thats $5 to block it off right from GM I bought one like 4 months ago when i did my manifold swap
i got a gm egr block off plate for sale, i used it when i put the s/c on my 96. now i removed the s/c and dont need it.
e mail me- jake_drew@hotmail.com. 10$ and it is yours.
that is weird though on how it idles smoother.
good luck though.

^Thanks, but I've got a piece of 1/16 steel to replace the sheet metal if it ever fails.
I'm assuming that the cat is partially plugged and forcing extra exhaust pressure through the egr. I have a pacesetter header, a new cat and 2 1/2 exhaust pipe ready to put on. When that's done, I'll try removing the cover plate and see if it's OK. I just wanted to know if I'd be throwing a code or cel (or hurting the motor) while it's blocked off.
I'll post when the new exhaust is done and what the results are.
Thanks to all for your help!

There is no EGR valve in an 02, there's just a block off plate in its place.
there is no block off plate on the 00- 02. the exhaust manifold dont let the exhuast through the head.
if you are using a 2k plus motor in a older car, just use the exhaust stuff from your year.
i have a 2k motor with the 96 egr crap.
side note. not many people i bet remember GRD.
anyways, i have there egr gasket with a 1/8th inch hole in it, instead of a half inch, as not to let all that hot egr crap back into the intake manifold. the 1/8th inch hole is just enough to keep the computer happy.
