Running Hotter after HO mani swap
Thursday, August 24, 2006 7:29 AM
Well im not sure if this is perfect for this forum but I think its 2.3 Mani swap related so ill put it in here:

I have a 97' GT and just recently did the HO mani swap and kept my EGR, info
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=2&i=361668&t=361412#361668

Since the swap, during driving the car is running a little hotter. On the temp guage, the needle is a little past halfway and will drop and rise a little but always on the hotter side of halfway. Before the swap the needle never went above halfway. I checked the plugs and they were whiter then normal. i dont have a datalogger so i cant tell you exactly how hot it is running. but since the plugs a white i know the engine is running hotter than it should be. im not throwing any codes.

I dont know if maby im running lean(more air from HO mani) and my computer isnt compesating correctly, or if theres and EGR problem(because of the custom job), or maby a bad thermostat ,o2 sensor,or FPR.My EGR is still putting exaust gas back into the mani like it did when it was stock, maby making it hotter??????

anyways, i need to fix this problem.I was thinking buy a AFPR and turning up the fuel pressure to make the car run richer making the car run cooler. colder plugs plugs???IDK

i figured i would ask you guys and get some advice on what to do next,
thanks

are you using the adapter flange? if not i would think the egr plus the fact that the aluminum mani would absorb heat more thus creating higher intake temps. just a guess though

I find this is just a natural happening of the HO manifold. due to it's metal construction rather than plastic.

does anyone else run hotter after the HO mani swap?
Isn't it harmfull to run the engine to hotter than normal?

first that I know of, that runs hotter..... and I've done a few HO swaps in my time....

have you replaced the heater hose you used for the EGR yet?

hows your coolant level?

is your water pump leaking?

make sure the grounds on the block are tight.

is your fan working properly?

Just did my swap couple weeks ago. Ya, it was the first thing I noticed too even with a phenolic spacer and 2 gaskets and rtv. It heats up faster in traffic, but even at its warmest, I can still keep my hand on the mani. I had some bogging issues early on but I tightened some vacuum connections, replaced the spark plugs and boots and that issue is gone. Runs great, sounds great. No codes thrown since install.

Could it be that it's just hot out?

well kind of... i have replaced it with more heater hose. when ever i do something to the engine i change it just to do it i guess. but every time i take it off to replace it theres nothing wrong with the tube.

coolant is fine

while messing with things this weekend i tried to get the fan running by turning on the AC and the fan wouldn't come on. i thought that when you turn on the AC or defrost the fan turns on. but not mine.

i think im leaning toward this being a coolant/airflow issue opposed to it being a "running lean issue"

could be possible you might be needing a new fan switch. also if you going through all this does anyone make a 180 degree theromstat. if not will the thermostat thats for a beretta 2.3 work for it?

^^^^i always thought that our cars came with a 195* thermostat, but my car manual says 180*?

Re: Running Hotter after HO mani swap

sounds like the fan is either unplugged, not grounded, or relay possibly bad...... the fan should turn on when the defrost is on (only ones I've seen that dont are the '02 EcoTec's)

The Thermostat should be a 180* thermo...... all stock ones I've seen in 2.4's have been (stamped 180F on the bottom)...... its possible that Canadian ones are 195*........

I used to have a AZ 180* thermo....... damn car would never get over 170*...... SUCKED in the winter.

Looks really good.....has the hose melted or become soft at all....just curious cause i thought of that too but ran a standard gas stove line...I thought i was looking at my own pictures for a sec...

i know whe you do the swap you have to take and cut the bolt with the stud on it to clear the HO mani...is it possible its not tight or you have a bad Connection...

i would look into a thermostat first if anything ....but check out the other things first....

does the fan come on with the defrosters on like "Speed" said??

i havent had any EGR issues with mine or did i have and heating issues....but i also replace my waterpump and t-stat while i was doing to turbo work....hope everything turns out

^^^^ which bolt....umm you lost me man.

the hose dosnt get soft or melt or deformed at all. i couldnt find any stove line so i used heater hose.

like i said with the car running i can turn on my AC and defrost on and look under the hood and the fan isnt spinning. the fan spins freely, so it must be a fuse or relay.

There is a stud on the front of the engine (by the bell housing), that is usually in the way when installing the HO manifold. I believe when using the spacer though, it might clear w/o having to move it.

AZ = Auto Zone....... I believe its called 'safety stat' or some crap, dont use it...... Hypertec I think has a 160* stat for our cars.

If i have know luck ill try the new/lower T-stat.

LOL... same here! I wasnt sure if u meant Arizona cuz AZ is Arizona too. I feel like an idiot LOL and as for 160* I like that idea.. it'd make it run so much cooler in a fawking hot temps around here during the summer. We'll see if i can get one Do you happen to have the part number...if u can find it?

Is there any possible way a 160 degree t-stat could be a bad thing.

Re: Running Hotter after HO mani swap
Tuesday, August 29, 2006 1:21 PM
for warm-up in winter.. its not recommended. Thats just me though... Look at what Brian said... his winter start-up with 180 degree t-stat was a pain in the butt.

Re: Running Hotter after HO mani swap

maybe you did blow a fuse or you have a bad relay...maybe a bad ground as well...i dont know what to tell yeah without actually lookin at the car first hand....hope you figure it out though

just for the archives..

I had a bad T-stat and t-stat seal. swithed it out and flushed my coolant system. car stays cool while moving. still cant get the fan working, thinking bad fan motor.

more info... ALL sunfire gt's came stock with a 180 degree t-stat NOT a 195 degree.
