dual exhaust

im not talking about the dual exhaust you all see on most 4 bangers where the 1 pipe splits into 2 at the end, im talking about actual dual exhaust. I know you would need custom headers, but would a true dual exhaust be benefitial when boosted and running 2.5" exhaust? I was thinking about it at work, i know it would help, but would the performance gains be very minimal and not worth it? I just want some opinions.

If you really wanted to go true dual, get a 4-2-1 header, and just put two pipes coming off of the 4-2 part. Would it be any better than 4-2-1? Probably not. Might even be worse since there's only 2 cylinders per exhaust pipe.

I dont believe that there is enough room under the car to do that. Besides do you really want 2 skinny @$$ pipes for an exhaust?

Whats up people?

Just run a custom header...stacks comming out the hood...hahahaha

No really, any gains you might get from running duals are not worth the extra weight of the 2nd pipe, hangers, mufflers. If your going turbo there is no posible way to do true duals unless you do twin turbo, only have <4 cylinders pushing the turbo, or run the 2nd pipe for your wastegate.

I think you are much better off running a 4-2-1 header, and 2.25" header-back exhaust, unless you plan to turbo then 2.5".

True duals wouldn't be that hard. You would need a header flange. Then have some pipes bent for the header. Two banks of two pipes. Run both pipes to a side exhaust exhaust. You could run a glass pack, or straight out without too much added weight.

The easiest would be to use a o2 simulator, and run open pipes out the side, behind the front wheel or in front of the rear wheel.

With a proper pipe design, you could still achieve the scavenging effect from a 4-1 header.

isn't it for true duels you need two heads. header/manifold for each side making it a true duel exhaust set up so dosn't ehat knock our cars off the list?

Ummm...Dual exhaust for a V8 equals 4 much larger cylinders going into one usually 2.25 or 2.5 pipe. Now, your telling me that you think 4 smaller cylinders need dual exhaust? Only way to do dual exhaust would be to do like said above, a 4-2-1 header (singular, your 4 cylinder only has one head, which means only has one exhaust manifold) and cut of the 2-1 part and run two exhaust pipes off of the header there. This would slow it down quite a bit, because of the weight off all the piping/hangers/extra muffler, and hurt the performance because the exhuast velocity would drop tremendously. So, if you want to do it for the abilty to say "I have true dual exhuast", do it, nobody is stopping you.

it could be done, but proper tuning of the exhaust would be critical. We run true duals on some VW's (air cooled) with some reporting noticable gains. If the length is kept as short as possible, it might work out ok.

Lots of research would need to be done, as this is not something that is really tried.

I would think that if the exhaust is setup in a way similar to a V-twin motorcycle, it might not be too bad.

Of course, the headers on the market today are pretty ok, so why not use something proven.

How about something like this?

You can kiss your torque goodbye if you run either of the pipes fatter than 1.5". The best N/A is gonna be single 2" not boosted whatever you want boosted as the turbo kills torque anyways till it's spun up. If you do run say dual 2" your topend will be nice but anyone that's ever run their car open manifold knows that the launch sucks but that topend is sex. Your talking a 4 banger here. Best thing to do is single 2 inch from the header back thru a cat and resonator then split to dual 2" pipes(at least 4 feet from the header excluding the cat but including a resonator if used. and pipes after this can be compression bent it won't matter) for two turbo mufflers if you want it quiet or two ghetto cans if you want it loud. If you like it sounding like crap you can leave out the resonator.(no offence to anyone that likes that sound) one of the benifets of this kind of exhaust is that when you decide to go boosted you can expand everything from the split back to 2.5" and your good to go.

i will be boosting next year after the eco swap so 2" isnt really enough. i will be going with 2.5 or 3".

I was just curious on the gains and from the sounds of it with everything tuned and done right the gains will be very minimal and not worth the effort.

ditto on the loss of torque. cutting away from the velocity big time. I was thinking about doing a split after the cat but you have to run the pipes the same route to the back. Other wise you would have to have the exhaust come out either of the side of the car. Not much gain imo.
