My fisrt post...ahhh.. I am a newbie...lol
Ive been on several other forums and have always gotten good information from them. As well as done my own fair share of helping other people. I know the s10forum and j-body forum go hand in hand.
I am helping a friend.... blah blah blah... make a long story short, he drove around without a coolant temp sensor and no coolant in 105+ heat.
Head gasket actually looks ok, with the exception of some blow-by from cylinder to cylinder.
But the cylinder that was catching the bulk of the coolant doesnt have any cross hatching left. I guess it got steam cleaned.
He cracked the head big time too.
Whats my best option? Should I have it bored out .30 over? or is there something that I dont know... like some kinda performace block or something. Or maybe just go with a junkyard motor and a rebuild.
Ive been making a few calls around and the best deal I can find is a rebuilt long block for 1800
We arnt going to make it into a hotrod by any means, but if my stock vs. performance option is the same or just a slightly bit more... why not go that route?
I know the feeling of having a small 4 cylinder... I have an 2.2 in an s-10 and know the lack of performance. So if I can do some small internals.. like a cam then I would like to go with that option.
Maybe swaping it out for a v6 or a newer 2.2 motor if the motor mounts will allow it.
Thanks guys!
Erron
Personaly, I would find a junk yard engine and rebuild it. Or if you want to do an engine swap there are a few options. There is the 2.2 Ecotec and the 2.4 LD9 out of the Z24's and Sunfire GTs. But if you deiced to go with a V6 swap there is the 3100 or the 3.8 S/C that is a fun swap. But like I'm sure you know doing an engine swap takes custom work. I don't know alot about the 2.2's at all but I do know that the 2.4 LD9 has alot of options, and with that engine if done right you can put alot of power to the ground N/A or boosted. Here are a few engines that I have heard people swapping into their Cavalier's and Sunfires:
2.2 OHV
2200
2.2 Ecotec
2.3 HO/LO (OBD I)
2.4 LD9
3100
3.8 Supercharged
In the planning stage for an all American TRD Cavalier.
After talking with the owner, he has decided that he wants to keep the same 2.0 motor
I did suggest going with a newer motor or even a v6, he decided that he wants to either rebuild the motor or else rebuild the top end (minus the worn out cam).
Its not my money and not my car...I just make the suggestions and show him the problems.
I would at very least like to pull the motor and rebuild the whole thing.
Is there an on-line performance store that supports the sunfires and the internals?
Is t\it possible to pull the motor out of the engine bay without pulling it (and the suspension) from the bottom?
Just looking at it, I think it will clear.
But I dont have the experience of pulling motors out of these kinds of cars.
Thanks for your help!
Thanks!
You really helped me out!
