HELP: why a CEL when i use my air/fuel gauge?
Friday, October 06, 2006 1:26 AM
so i hooked up my air/fuel gauge a few weeks ago. on a cold start my car idles funny, which ive heard is normal. after a minute or less the idle is fine and it drives fine.

then a few days ago my CEL (check engine light) came on and my car was idleing a little more wierd then usual. i unhooked the air/fuel gauge and returned the setup to stock, and have had no idle or CEL problems since.

can anyone explain what is going on? my car is a 98 z24 w/ manual 2.4L LD9

thanks!

P.S. just so you know, i ran the wire from the AF gauge between the ECU and the o2 sensor, on the o2 sensor side.

Bad connection of your air fuel??? If it's not hooked up correctly the ecu may recieve a falsed signal caused by a resistance!! It's why I can think of right now!!!

Are you using a wide-band sensor? If so, there should be a narrow-band output on the controller that scales the signal down for the ECU - make sure that's what you use for teh ECU. If you feed a wide-band signal to the ECU it'll run fine as long as it can recognize the signal but the first time the voltage out of the ECU's program, it'll look at it like and try to correct it when there's really nothing wrong. Could explain why the car is running like the poo...

common issues with basic a/f gauges

plus some computers seam to be a little more picky than others

best is to add another o2 sensor for dedicated use with the a/f gauge , or just use a wide band set up

wide band is a little too much for what i want to do right now.

i might set up a dedicated o2 sensor but i dont know.

thanks for the replies.

nice thing with a dedicated o2 for the a/f gauge , it will give you a bung for the wide band

but i do recomend using putting the sensor in the down pipe just before the cat
