I was wondering if it was possible to convert the stock ignition system with one from MSD. I wanted to know if I can use the Cam Sync Generator, external coils and plug wires without buying an actual ignition box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what car do you have and what motor?
only reason you would need to do this is if you have some sort of high power motor.

2.2 coil conversion escape you?

i have an 03 ls sport with the 2.2 ecotec. i only asked because i thought it may add some power and i saw msd made the parts.

in my opinion, it be a waste

i just did the 2.2 coil conv a week ago, and besides getting the firing order mixed up, everything worked perfect! It actually felt like it had a tiny bit more power down low....but it
IS getting better spark cause I have no more misfire near redline! I say do it to itttt

i have one, i sure noticed it. with other mods it will work better. they will all work together. the more the mods the better they will work. it's not a waste.
yeah i saw the site on how to install it with the DIS box but what i was wondering was can you install just the coils, cam sync and wires WITHOUT the box?

theres no point whatsoever running msd coils and wires off the stock ICM, its totally inefficient and even if it did work it would be far less effective than the stock setup
its only beneficial to run aftermarket coils and wires when your bumping up the voltage, stock is made to handle stock voltage. In my experiences with the MSD ive blown 2 sets of stock coil packs just running the box right to the stock coils in 30k miles, id say theres a need for aftermarket stuff when running an msd
Also I dont think you want to spend 300 dollars in parts for a ignition that performs worse than stock

I just thought maybe the system would work a little better with better coils instead of the stock ones. And if indeed they won't work on the stock icm, what type of msd box would I need, would it only work with the dis-2 or could i buy a different box like the 6AL?

The stock ignition system is actually pretty good! I don't know specific details, but I know with the GTP guys (3.8L V6 supercharged motor), the stock coils are more powerful than the MSD coils... so there's no point in switching.
Unless you NEED a hotter spark... ie nitrous, and you're blowing the spark out with the extra power... then I wouldn't bother.
I put a MSD DIS-2 on my old 2000 Z24 when I first started running nitrous - only because I needed a way to retard the timing. That was pretty much it. The hotter spark the MSD DIS-2 provided... using the stock coils and springs & boots, was a slight benefit...
ok well since the ignition apparently is a good setup, what else can i do to bump up my performance? i already have a k&n typhoon intake, pacesetter header, magnaflow cat, 2.5" stainless exhaust, and upgraded spark conductor springs. i ain't looking to be a drag racer i just want a lil more power. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
