They mount the same, but the plastic tanks have a extra line running from the front of the car back. Also the Evap system is mounted in the rear as well.

steel tank is larger than the plastic tank

the plastic tank is all plastic

both fit in the same spot

^ werd.

95-99 tank is steel... 15.2 gallons (57.5 L)
00-05 tank is plastic... 14.1 gallons (53.4 L)

95-98 has a front-mounted EVAP canister and a vent line next to the fuel filler line by the gas cap. 99-05 has the EVAP canister mounted between the tank and the axle under the rear of the car. there is no vent line to the gas filler, but instead an EVAP line runs parallel to the fuel send & return lines to the engine bay.

The tanks are the same as the N-body tanks... my 2000 'vert has an 04 Alero tank in it, with a 00 Buick Park Avenue fuel pump

So 99 is a hybrid year... same fuel pump canister as all years, but the evap is on it, unlike the 95-98 design. And the level sensor changed in 2000, uses silver contacts which were recalled in most places for reading quarter tank when they were really empty... most 00 and 01 cars.

I think that's all the useless gas tank info I have in my head...

Anyone know the weight difference between the two?

hold on 14.1 gals?..

Alright, add a new level sender to the christmas list, it shows empty after using 11 gallons. I don't think it has a built in 3 gal reserve, then again it does keep me from running dry...

All N 3rd and 4th gen and J body 3rd gen tanks mount the exact same way, just different sizes and whatnot. All gm car fuel pumps from the early 90s through now are the same fitments (different flow rates). I've got a 02 Grand Prix pump in my tank for instance.

according to my 01 Z manual our cars have a 1.5 "reserve" Meaning our check gauges light "Fuel light" comes on when it thinks you have 1.5 gal left.

No but I can find out. I have been planning to. We have one of each in storage. We just have not weighted them yet. Also the pre 2k fuel pumps and 2k+ are very different.

So the fuel pump from my '97 swap right into a 2k+ plastic tank from what I read. Awesome.

I stashed a tank from a 2001 Z24 in the interior of it, cause I meant to go back and pick it up replace my rusty steel one on the new '97!

I meant that they will physically fit if you wanted to change from one to the other. That does not mean they have the same functionality.

no because in my 05 ive gotten 15 gallons in my tank and theres no way the piping holds 3 gallons

Re: Plastic Gas Tank?
Thursday, December 07, 2006 1:27 PM
ive ran my 00 outta gas and it took just under 12 gallons to fill it

my 97 took 16 and i wasnt even out of gas yet , lol

15 gallons in a 00-05 id worry were the extra gas was going

Be careful if you use large exhaust piping and the plastic tank. If its too close it can melt it. Mine started to melt but I beefed up the heat shielding and it seems to be fine now.

Yeah be REALLY careful on aftermarket exhuast pipes- my buddy just had this happen- melted a hole into the front of the gas tank, so now he has to replace it(and we cant find a new "plastic" one though, so we are going to have to use a steel one). Anyone have an idea how long it takes to switch one out?

Tank = 15.2 G, plus filler neck you must have been very empty
