intake vs drop in filter

Is there a big difference in performance between a intake and just a K&N drop in filter with the resonator box removed?

Cut a hole in the bottom of your air filter box, and remove everything after that......then no.

only difference i can see, and its not too much of a difference, is the fact that an aftermarket intake generally has a smooth pipe, where as our black rubber hose is ribbed

exactly and the smoother the air flow the better gains

yes, but its really only a 2.2 litre... if you saw a +3 horsepower difference between the above stated modded airbox vs a cone filter/intake tube, i would be shocked.

I cannot say if there is a big performance between the two, since I did not dyno the two back to back.
Personal preference, I'd stay drop-in. Why? The factory's system is designed better at not catching hot air. Look at all the material used in a stock system and you'll see it is a good protector from the high heat. While aftermarket uses metal, in which attracts/maintains heat longer.
Yes, you may get some ribs in the stock tube that may slightly distract the flow, but I've notice the width/volume of stock tube is bigger then some A/M tubes.
Your best bet is to use silicone tubing in place of the stock ribbed one.
Also with a drop-in it will be quieter too. Intakes has no sound control so you will here a resonance at WOT.

Or do what I did... Get a Ram-air hood, make a hole in the air box and suck-in outside air.
(No regrets here)
