Is hope lost?
Monday, January 29, 2007 7:14 AM
Well I have been a member of j-ody.org since I have bought my 2004 cavalier, and i went through the typical 16 year old stage with the neon lights and strobes and sound system, and now with that all cut off, I find myself missing having a car to wrench on, for the past year i have done nothing but oil changes and regular maintenance. One of the main things is because everytime i think of doing some heavy modifications, (i.e. turbo or building up the block) someone comes along and says hey man its just a cavalier, there's no potential. I was wondering if I should just ignore them and keep on trying to make it into something, or just give up and keep it as a daily driver. Thanks for the guidance, and a big apology to anyone who is annoyed by the post.

aparently your not over that "16 year old stage" if your so worried about other peoples opinions that it keeps you from doing what you want.

Its your car, its your money, its your life, if not 16 anymore then act like it.

Go look at the racing forum at the top 10 list... cavaliers have unknown potential that not many people realize and can be made to quite fast... espically ecotec equipped cavaliers.

Jbodys have gotten into the 13's, 12's, and some into the 11's in the 1/4 mile. but that also took a lot of $$$$. and if you dont have that. then dont bother

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

Many of us who modify J-bodies for performance enjoy owning a car which no one would expect to lose to.

Just keep in mind...

"No matter how fast you are, there will always be someone faster"

Sure you can modify a civic to run high 10's, but there will be a Supra guy running low 10's who will tell you that you are wasting your money modifying a fwd 4 cylinder, then there will be a big block guy running 9's that tells the Supra guy that he is wasting his money modifying an Inline 6. There are too many people who just aren't tolerant of what other people do to their cars. Don't expect us or anyone else to tell you what to do with your time and money. It's up to you to decide what you want to drive and how fast you want to go.

I agree 100% with what Brian said, and in fact I live by that saying when it comes to modifying my cars for speed. There will ALWAYS be somebody faster because there will always be somebody who wants it more, has better resources, and goes that extra mile. To me it's not about being the greatest or the fastest or a "God" or anything stupid like that... it's in knowing I took something that most people look at as being nothing and I made it into something really special.... and that's all on me. Above all else I do what I do for me, and not for others..... should they get some inspiration or enjoyment or whatnot from what I do well then that's a bonus for them and me... otherwise - I do this for me.

If you can accept those facts and accept the fact it will take a LOT of money to make a j-body reasonably quick and you won't get that money back.... then you're good to go. Have fun, set some goals and try to achieve them - and never let anybody - ESPECIALLY not other J-body owners - tell you that you can't do something with these cars.

As I said, there's always somebody faster. Maybe that somebody is you.

who cares what people think. it's your car. take some pride in it. modify because you want to modify it, not to impress anybody else. that's how i think about it.

I'm sorry dude but your car doesn't even come close to being quick stock. It's a 17 second car, 16 on a good day. I know, I had one.

Any negative discussion on the 2.0 stops here.

My favorite mod on my 03 was the HAHN turbo kit. Hands down there isn't a better way to spend $3500 on the car. Sucks to be me moving to Cali and selling the turbo.

STFU. I stated a fact. You don't like it then get off the site. I had the car he claims is quick so I pointed out a simple FACT. DEAL.

Thanks for all the quick response, I have gotten a lot from it, I like wrenchin on cars, a lot, and I understand all of what you are saying, however, being in college, and working part time, i don't have as much funding as the 16 year old that had the set up already done, I just wasn't sure of what to do, guess just come to the best place i know where to ask questions, I was looking at the "opportunity cost" of putting decent money into a cavalier, yeah i always dreamed of takin down cars that think they have more power, but for as much money as i could put into a turbo and tuning i could just as easily put 3500 into a ls1 powered camaro and have a car with a powerful drive-train already, then comes into the saying, someone will always be faster. I agree with everything everyone has said from not to pay much attention to the hater, doing what i choose to be best for me, and everything else, thanks a lot for the help and I will make my decision soon,

absolute 180% aggreement from me

I modify my car because its fun, I enjoy it. You win some, you lose some.

Just the faster you make your car, the more often you win.

I like winning lol

when your car gets fast enough that you do start to turn heads, the naysayers get quickly beat out by people saying
"wow man that car is crazy"
"I had no idea cavaliers could go that fast"
"I'm a cavalier girl.. GO CAVALIER!!!"
"I said to myself as soon as I lined up next to you (V6 camaro)'oh man.. I'm going to get run down by a cavalier'."

then people who talk @!#$ just sound like "blahblahblah"

i take satisfaction in people thinking my car is a pile (the new dented up fender makes it look even worse) and the looks on peoples faces as I leave them in the dust make it all worth while.

no better feeling than having everyone shut u down saying cavaliers suck...then building a cavy and just watching their face as u pull car after car on there "fast" car......and to pull on a V8 or super/turbo V6 gives u such a huge feeling of accomplishment...makes it all worth it
