Power Issues.
Wednesday, January 31, 2007 2:41 PM
I have a '98 Z24 5 speed with the LD9. Its also got the optional 3.96:1 final drive. When I bought the car with 83,000 miles if felt really strong. Its been getting steadily worse. Its got 96,000 now. Then just the other day I got beat by a Ford Ranger. Thats a big problem. The only mods I have is a aftermarket air filter, if you can call that a mod. Since my problem starts with zero power off the line i was thinkin catalytic converter. And maybe goin with a Weapon R secret weapon intake as well. Any help in the matter would be good.

just a cat alone wont do much. do the entire exhaust system. header, cat, resonator, piping, muffler, blah blah etc.
and an intake is where people usually start

and the weapon r is an extremely overpriced piece of tube. seriously, get a $30 ebay intake and a k&n cone filter if you're going to do anything.

Is the short ram intake idea the best way to go, or is leaving the stock airbox on the best idea? What do you think about the pacesetter exhaust system? I can get one for $189 on importperformanceparts, net . It would only be a 2 1/4 inch system. Is the stock system 2"?

I'd say like cheap mods, definatly intake, then full exhaust system (personally i leave the cat out), then maybe turbo sometime, high flow injectors, there can be lots of others, depends on how much you want to spend, good luck

you dont need high flow injectors until you boost!!!

I wasn't confused at all. I'm really not a newbie to any of this. I grew up around cars besides the fact that my dads been a GM tech for 25 years. I'm just a little unfamiliar with the sport compact market. I know the same rules apply for small block chevys too. More flow equals more power. Would leaving the cat off be the best idea? I could just pull the cat off and knock all the @!#$ outta it and leave it up there just for the looks. U know just in case anybody decides to get smart and look under the car. Itd be the same difference right? If it werent for money issues i'd be runnin 10-12 lbs of boost, and i'm plannin to do that later. Plus ive heard puttin headers on it is a waste of money anyways.

well, my dad has an accord, and left the cat off, i left it off on my sunbird, u get a lil better flow without it, and a header.... their ok, but ur better w/ whole exhaust, not just header, bigger diamenter tubes all the way back, no cat is illegal, better performance though, but really whos gonna look for it if u do go no cat??

a header is not a waste of money, at least in my case anyways, buy an intake, 4-1 header, 2.25 or bigger exhaust and ull notice a difference. If i were you, id get a high flow cat, i left the cat out on mine the first time i did my exhaust and i hated the sound, really tinny and really loud, not a nice tone at all. And as far as noticing a difference in power i noticed absolutely no power loss when i slapped the high flow on there.

Buyin a header right now would be a waste of money...we were talkin about boostin later, and in that case I would need a turbo manifold. And I do plan to boost. Yeah i was wonderin about the resonance if i just knocked the stuff out. I figure I'll go with a 2.5 inch exhaust. That should do what i want until I'm boosted.

just get the high flow cat. granted it doesnt flow anymore per say, but if you're going with a 2.5 inch system, you'll have a cat, thats cheap and is the proper size. dont knock the honeycomb out, it will sound horrible.
