Did the manifold swap today
Tuesday, May 01, 2007 4:32 PM
Well I did my 2.3 manifold swap today using the fontana flange, took me about 3hrs but i had some problems along the way.

It was a PITA trying to keep lining up the holes since I had 2.3 gasket-flange-2.3 gasket-manifold; the gaskets just kept moving and all so I just said screw it and used some rtv gasket maker. I do have a check engine light and trac off light, and my rpms bounce a little when I let off the throttle; which I read the code and its either a vac leak or bad iac. Im thinking it may be a bad iac because I had this problem a few times before I did the swap, but im gona leave my battery unplugged for a while and see what happens. Im also gona spray some carb cleaner around to see if I find a vac leak.

It does pull somewhat harder up top, but the only thing I changed was the manifold cause I already had a bored out 58mm 2.4 tb that Im using. Hopefully i can get the problem taken care of but overall its a good mod for the money

i am getting ready to do mine soon and i see you have an automatic so i would like to ask this. did you have any issues with fitting it? i have seen somewhere they do with the auto. also do you use the factory throttle cables i seen somwhere where they tell you to find a discontinued part number, so how does that work? those are the only things holding me back and any help from those that have done it is appreciated.

I didnt realy have any fitment issues, except the rad hose near the battery kind of got in the way of the throttle bracket. But other than that no. The injector wiring harness kinda gets in the way when trying to mount the manifold, but no problems realy with anything trans related.

I used my stock throttle cable, havnt hooked the cruise up yet cause theres some modification needed for that but Im not worried about it right away. My throttle bracket is only on using one of my stock tb bolts to hold it, so its not that straight. Im gona take the bracket and dremel out the bottom hole to fit the larger bolt used to bolt the 2.4 tb to the 2.3 manifold.

Does anyone know how far the iat can extend? I want to make a straight down cai coming off the tb but not sure if I need to buy an iat extension, splice some extra wire on it, or just open up the wire loom some to make it reach down by the battery?

i know casper electronics makes extensions for a lot of sensor wires so you might wanna check there. thanks for the help, i think you can flip the cruise module upside down from what i read somewhere. i have already done the swap to fit the 2.4 throttle wheel of a 2.3 tb and all that work i still have to do the match work on the ports but it is cleaned, and painted so i can't wait to get it done. also there have been a few people that fit a camaro? iat on the manifold. well best of luck and tahnks for the help.

i have an auto
i flipped the CC module around. some trouble getting the manifold around the injector harness but its ok now. the bolt for the alternator was a pita to get out. for the gasket i used some RTV gasket marker to sort of "glue" the gaskets to the flange. i put the 2 studs at the bottom in first to help guide everything into place.
here are some pics. hope they help

general overall veiw

breather filter from APC

use my stock S tube. since the one end of the tube is oval, and the end of the filte ris round. i cut off about 4-5 inches of my intake and stuck one end into my stock S tube and the filter went on nicley

CC bracket.

I did all of that when I did my manifold swap. I also cut off the tops of the alternator bolt and fuel rail bolts so that I could get a socket on the far left bolt for the manifold, and so that the fuel rail bolts will come out without hitting the runners.

I don't think the wire will extend that far no matter how far you open the loom. You'd either need to splice or add an extension. Another option would be using an open or closed element screw in style IAT sensor. There is a spot for it on top of the manifold right after the throttle body. I will be using this with my Northstar TB, so that I don't have to drill a hole into the intake.

Yea I tried to flip my cc brack around but it seems like you have to cut off a little plastic to make it fit cause it hits the very top of the fire wall; also it seems like you would have to drill new holes to mount it cause the studs arent long enough to fit on the nut when you flip it upside down.

Ive seen alot of different people make custom cai's or just run their s-tube straight down. What do they do about the iat?

I also unpluged my battery for a few hrs, and got rid of the check engline light, but trac off came back and the rpms still bounce to about 1500 and back for a few seconds. Like I said this is either the iac or a vac leak, but to anyone whos had this problem after the swap what was it?

Im gona try to go to the track tomorow so Ill see if the manifold alone gives a gain. Many people are curious to what power it gives or what gains you may see so Ill find out tomorow. It does seem to pull harder, and my exhuast seems deeper and not as raspy. Idk if its in my head or what lol

I noticed the same thing on the top end gain and I did the same on cutting the top of the alt. bolt off as far as the cruise I just deleted that. The IAT all I did was splice wire and extend and some of the wiring all I did was open the split loom and a little to get that extra slack I needed.Sound difference is great from the stocker.

For the cc u dont flip the bracket u flip the actual module itself. It should slide right out and u do have to cut a little notch out of the braket for the cable to go through but thats it........its easy. I also only have one bolt holding the stock throttle bracket down. To get it straight on there put a bolt in the hole you cant use and tighten the other one bam........its straight

There are some pics of my set up, u can kinda see the cc

you dont flip the bracket around, you flip the module

Yea ill try flipping the cc around but for now Im not worried about it.

Going to the track in a little bit to test out if the manifold swap alone shows anything.

i ordered the block off plate and gasket today. should be in friday. maybe this weekend i can do the 2.3 swap. did my underdrive pulley today.

I dropped .2 off my 1/4 times with just a lo manifold on my auto, definitely worth the money. I ran 6 times in 3hrs, and my manifold was cool to the touch from my fontana flange.

if you want ill take pics of the CC module tommorow so you see how it goes.

i also used Felpro gaskets for the swap. they are supposed to be one of the best ones around

I got it off the car and Im gona flip it around. I mainly need to worry about my throttle bracket cause its not on there very good. Im gona dremel the bottom hole on it to be able to use the bigger bolts that go into my 2.3 manifold.

I have 2 2.3 felpro gaskets i modified a bit, I may take it back off and use some gasket maker to help them stick better.

My throttle bracket has one bolt holding it on and it has work perfectly since Dec 06!!

Don't know. It is from a camaro, but I don't remember either. I'm thinking LT1, but not sure. I bought it off of www.diyautotune.com

Has anyone with poly mounts done this swap, and seen less vibes? Over the past few days of driving it I realized that my vibrations are almost completely gone. I dont notice any vibes at all while sitting, which before my whole dash would rattle, and I only see a little when my a/c is on. This make any sense to anyone?

i was looking at some of ya'lls 2.3 mani swap pictures and i noticed the way the throttle bracket was done is different than mine. how did ya'll do it? here is pics of how i did it. Forgive me for the copper rtv everywhere when i get the adapter i shall redo it all properly.

I had to mod it with a dremel tool to make it fit but has any one else done it this way?

Re: Did the manifold swap today

My bracket is kinda wedged in against the rad hose, and a small bolt just keeping it secured to the tb with no nut on the other end cause it wont fit. Im gona take off the bracket eventualy and dremel the holes out to use the bigger bolts needed to bolt a 2.4 tb to the 2.3 manifold.

On a side note my manifold is black and I used blue vac line too

You can get the intake manifold from a number of variety cars like, grandam GT, sunfire GT, barreta, and even a cutlass i think (2.3 engines only). But there are two types, the LO and the HO manifold. As for the flange adapter iam stumped also but i know induction-dynamcis sells the 2.4 flange so you can weld it to the manifold but they sell it for like $300 so thats a big NO. But you can buy it complete with a 2.4 flange from mantapart.com
