LE5?
Wednesday, May 16, 2007 11:48 PM
Forgive me if this is already posted, I did a one-second search on "LE5" and saw nothing in the search, so I figured I'd start one up. Well, from what I've read, the LE5 is the newer engine going into the 07/08 cobalts. Now, to anyone who have heard the specs on it, is it possible to swap one of these in place of a 2200 or an ecotech? I'm not really planning on a swap since I've only got one car and it gets me to work so I can't afford the down time, but knowledge on the topic would be entertaining.

a search for more than one second would turn up quite a few responses about the subject.

this has also been posted about numerous times on ecotecforum.com

in a nutshell, the engine will bolt in yes, but electronically it won't work without a lot of modification.

there's a few different ways to go about hooking the engine up to work, but getting the variable cam phasing to work properly without re-wiring the whole car as an 06+ cobalt is highly unlikely.

The LE5 is a larger 2.4 L (2384 cc) version of the Ecotec. Both the 88 mm bore and 98 mm stroke are larger, and Variable Valve Timing on the intake and exhaust improve low-end torque. Power is 170 hp (127 kW) and torque is 170 ft·lbf (230 N·m).

The engine uses a reinforced "Gen II" block

The LE5 is/will be used in:

2006-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt
2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice
2006-2007 Saturn Sky
2006-2007 Saturn ION
2006-2007 Pontiac G6
2006-2007 Pontiac Pursuit
2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR
2007 Saturn Aura Green Line Hybrid
2007 Saturn VUE Green Line Hybrid
2007 Pontiac G5
2008 Chevrolet Malibu
The LE5 is also used in the following overseas models:

2006 GM Taiwan Buick LaCrosse
2006 Shanghai GM Buick LaCrosse

Why would anyone go through all that trouble to gain 20-30 hp?
Just get a turbo
