Theres alot more to a hot tank than just heat....among other things theres solvents in the solution to remove among others, oil, grime, gaket material, ect. and cleans the block up to get back down to the metal. This isn't something you can do yourself. But to answer your question I've seen tanks as hot as 160F or so.

It will loosen rust but not remove it, you will need to wipe the loose rust then some light abrasives to remove the rest.

Ok, the stuff im going to use is "lye" like "red devil"... instead of the caustic chemicals... this should still work to get rust off right?? lye is also used by some machine shops i beleive...

its only like $50 to have a block hot tank well worth it. instead of dealing with all the hassle and it will probably come out better from a shop anyways.

Be careful when hot tanking aluminum parts. There are some shops that use chemicals that will EAT ALUMINUM AWAY. I have seem it with my own eyes and it wasn't pretty. Made the purchase of a aluminum intake manifold worthless.

Just be careful and do some research.

Ok... well i decided not to hot tank it myself... i called the machine shop and they said to get the surface rust off and paint, ect. ect. it would be best to use a i think it was called something like tumble shot oven? they explained it.. something like it heats up to like 500 degrees, then shoots metal balls at the block... my old concern is.. they said it will have to be finish honed after because the balls would mess with the cylinder hone... my question is... will it just be able to be honed, not have to be bored over?? thanks, it is appriciated for your help...
