the ecotec is a Z24 motor until about 2002.5 then they switched over to the ecotec in certain models (yours).. and I say 2002.5 loosy, so don't flame.

If you are considering a 2.4 LD9, personally I would recommend against it.. but rather look into getting a 2003+ ecotec block as there were some enhancements, main ones that I remember are oiling passage ways. but others can chime in here with other goodies.

The reason I would go eco over LD9 are 1)stronger bottom end 2)better oiling system 3)stronger block 4)better timing chain setup 4)all aluminum block 5)more GM support 5)instead of changing to a 2.3 oiling system (expensive) and getting arp main bolts, and cometic head gasket, it is more accepted to install rods/pistons into an ecotec and get the same results from a lighter block. Having said all that, I have a built LD9 and it has been reliable @ 280whp for 20k miles already.

stick with the ecotec.

I want to share something with you - the three sentences that will get you through life. Number one, 'cover for me', Number two, 'oh, good idea, boss', Number three, 'it was like that when I got here.'

yeah it looks like ur prob isnt the motor its the tranny, and if u were to swap a 2.4 motor ud be using the same tranny just with a different bellhousing so stick with the eco and just get a new trans and slave

It all depends on want your goal is. A Ecotec is not a Z24 motor. I know in Canada they sold Z24's with Ecotec's, but truly when someone says Z24 no one askes is it a Ecotec or a 2.4.

yea..the "ecotec was a z24 motor" comment kinda made me raise an eyebrow haha
but serious..if your considering the LD9 why just use the HO quad..much stronger and faster and bolts up all the same

Egad, this again The Z24 name has nothing to do with a 2.4L motor. Show me a second gen with a 2.4L motor in it

Back to the original question... the Ecotec is a pretty solid motor... gievn the choice, I'd get another Ecotec instead of going to an older motor - the 2.4L. Especially for some of the work you'd have to do swapping one in.... better off just sticking with what you've got.

As for the slave cylinder... it's part of the transmission so it doesn't really matter what engine is connected to it.

Sounds like, overall, you've either got stuck with a lemon car, or a lemon mechanic has been working on it.

John you are correct. Z24's did have other motor's V6's in them. I think we all knew he was talking about a 3 gen (since he already has a Ecotec in it). That is why I said what I did. When you say Z24 when referring to a 3 gen you do not think Ecotec. I hope that sounds better.

I read that after I typed it and thought I should be premium so I could edit it, lol. But in my eyes when someone wants to do a Z24 swap from an eco, it better be a 2.3 or a v6, IMHO the LD9 is a downgrade.. as for the other 2 choices, it is open to discussion.

The LD9 is a much easier swap into the '00+ cars then either a 2.3 or a v6, especially if the recipient car came with the 2200.
As for your problems with not having 2nd gear and a bad slave, thats a transmission issue, you should be able to get a used trans for about 400-600 bucks at a salvage, and a replacement stage 1 Spec clutch is around 275-300 bucks and it comes with a new slave. Just make sure you get your flywheel re-surfaced if you replace the clutch.

I still think it is depending on what you want it for. All motor wise I feel the LD9 is the better motor. I know some people will say different, but that is my opinion.

who wants a damn Quad-4 anyways, its not like some of them back in the day came with 190 HP....

but in this day of age, for the price and ease of geting aftermarkit suport, ecotec all the way.

i still rather have a Quad-4\TwinCam.

Hmmm... Very Interesting... the reason why i Said Z24 (2.4) is because i could prolly get that motor cheap n then throw a S/c on it.. where is the Ecotec s/c is $2800.....

Hmmm. Spyhunter seems to have squeezed what,428hp out of an Ld9?And yes I know there has been Eco's in excess of a 1000 hp.

are you talking about the ecotec 2.0 s/c? only one you can buy with the s/c(that i know of)

its a diff, motor

can get a replacement 2.2 eco for like 1500 (cant remember where i saw it at)

personally i think turbo is better than s/c on the ecotec

as for the 2.4 being a better "all motor engine" what about skwirl? he had a all motor eco and that thing flew

I've found low mileage eco motors cheaper than high mileage LD9's so you may want to take that into consideration.

nah he's talkin about the supercharger kit for the 2.2 Eco that you can get, retails for 2800

Yes that kit is more expensive than the ld9 kit, but it also comes with a more powerful charger aswell. And if thats too rich for you you can peice together a turbo kit for a fairly decent budget, or go with nitrous & spend way less all around Up to you really, but personally I'd stick with my guns if I was u, just get that transmission fixed/replaced and u'll be good.

you can do a BASIC kit for prolly around that... but depending on what you want is what you'll be payin for... Check out the boost FAQ it should give you insight on what you can do with that budget and what would be expected of it
