Question about exhaust
Friday, August 10, 2007 9:13 AM
i have a 98 sunfire 2.4L... im going to a muffler shop to get is custom... but my question is should i get 2.25" or 2.5" diameter... and what muffler should i get to sound good... should i also get a resonator for it while im at it... thanks

seriously this is a BAD! question...this topic just causes problems.
Some will say that 2.5" is too big for a N/A car, and others think its just fine...
technically u should loose some torque if u go too big, and maybe gain some hp in the high rpms, but it still depends if the larger diameter can flow better... Lets use the example of drinking straws... the smaller one is more restrictive than the larger, for obvious reasons, but, a little bit of restriction yields torque, and quiets the exhaust. Scavenging is also another factor to consider... a mandrel bent will outflow a compression / crush bent pipe of the same size any day... I would strongly suggest u dont let anyone put crush bends in ur exhaust, they are just crap for everything, but they are the cheapest to do, so they are common for that fact. Good luck with ur project....sorry i don't know @!#$ bout fart cans....in all about the quiet performance

I live for the lateral G's...

i got 2.5 in, i'm n/a, if you think u might wona do forced induction in the future go 2.5 if not then maby 2.25
get resonator (longer = better) for sure, i got resonator, hi flow cat, and PILOT oval muffler and it sounds good, do not get one of those round fart cans

I put 3" on my cav and it didnt hurt me performance wise...it felt peppier throughout the whole rpm range. although i am planning on making a high reving engine.

Magnaflow ALL THE WAY!!!

2.25 if you going to stay N/A, but if you wanna boost it, then you HAVE to do AT LEAST 2.5, so if you have the slightest idea of wanting to turbo it, you should do 2.5, it doesnt hurt that much...

I would suggest, 2.5 from exhaust manifold back, hi-flow cat, 28" resonator, magnaflow 5x8 oval muffler with a 7 inch tip...

I'd definitely go 2.5" regardless of what you're planning down the road - boost or N/A. Don't buy into all the talk about losing low end power with a larger exhaust - not to say there's no basis for the theory, but we're talking a tiny, TINY amount, one that you probably won't even ever notice. Plus, as some have shown (PJ especially comes to mind), you don't build these cars, really, any car for that matter, with just low end power in mind. When you're in a performance driving situation, you're going to be launching the car from the mid RPM range anyways, and then it'll never see the low RPMs after that - only the middle to higher RPM range. Mod with that in mind. I'd say it wouldn't be until you get to cams that you'd be dealing with something that could appreciably reduce the low end power of your car for driving around town - and even then, we'd still have more low end power than a Honda

I don't think a 28" resonator would fit, let alone if you can find one. Magnaflow makes an excellent 18" resonator.

That sounds quite good. Looking forward to getting bigger pipe on mine.

Im ditching my 2.25" for 2.5" soon. Im doing a stans header,catless,30" glasspack res,2.5" piping and either a dynomax st or greddy ti, both of which I have. Ill be boosting soon, but I woulda went 2.5" eventually even if I was staying n/a.

Ive done alot trying out different exhaust parts, but I think Ill be happy with my final setup and it will work best with the sc.
