Engine Swap
Monday, August 27, 2007 8:34 AM
I have an 02 Cavalier, with a 2.2 engine...big rookie at engine, but what would it take for me to swap out the enginge for a 3400 V6 from a newer Grand AM? Money, time, parts, lemme know guys, you are the ones who know how to do this

ALOT.... you have to weld in motor mounts and do all kinds of custom work to fit it in. On top of that wiring harness and linkage

WRONG. Please don't give information you don't know about. If you haven't tried or researched a swap, don't speak on it. Look at my threads in the 3rd Gen forum. It's as close to a bolt-in swap as you can get puting an engine in a car that wasn't available with it.

Lower mount bracket needs to be fabricated (I know this isn't the sturdiest thing in the world, but I am pulling it to get it braced further):

Upper mount, there's 2 ways...

97 Grand Am 3100:

Or with an actual 3400 mount setup.

yes there is a mess of wiring:

(Don't let that scare you, it cleans up nicely)

But with any engine swap, where isn't there?

Once I get some time, I'll update my site with all the schematics at least from the 3400 that I used for the splicing.

As for the linkage...

Hmm... what's this? Oh, my 2.2 Isuzu tranny peeking out

the 3800 on the other hand... that's where all the custom work comes into play

Actually, if he has the 2200 SFI, the easiest swap as far as bolt on is the Ecotec. no welding, no cutting, its basically plug and play and fits perfect. ask anyone that has done the ecotec swap or witnessed it.

Read what I said again. I said it's as close to a bolt in as you can get puting an engine in a car that wasn't available with it.

Also, if you have a 2.2OHV (2200), and you want to do an Eco or 2.4, you need to change the tranny, because the DOHC engines have a different bell housing.
To put in the V6, you can use your existing tranny.

ahh.....thats pretty nifty that you can use the same tranny...but when he says hes a ENGINE ROOKIE, not sure he should try any swap before reading up and getting his hands dirty..

Correct, as long as you have a 2.2/2200 to start with. Key word there, though, is "pretty much". One more note... as far as the mechanical aspect goes, its pretty universal. Electrical, so far I've counted 5 or 6 different ways to tackle it, so there really isn't a how-to on that part...
