MSD Conversion
Tuesday, August 28, 2007 3:19 PM
I've searched but can't find what I'm looking for.

I wan't to do a MSD conversion on my 2.4 because my stock coil pack just went out for the second time and i'm getting tired of it.

I've looked around the internet but cant find a complete MSD system for the 2.4. I don't wan't to custome make any wiring harnesses, and would like some adjustability in case I ever go the boost or spray route.

Does anyone know if MSD makes a complete adjustable setup for the 2.4, that I can just plug the stock ICM plug into the MSD controller, than just wire up the MSD coils to the MSD controller? I'm pretty sure the DIS-2 is what I need to get, but I'm wondering if there is a certain model I need for the 2.4. I wan't a plug and play sytem or close. Any info or MSD part #'s would be great, thanx guys.

They do not make a plug and play kit for the 2.4.

only one person i can remember did it for the 2.4, used an icm from a 2.2ohv, and coil packs pn8224. you'll prob have to take some time and search the archives, but it has been done.

as said, no kits.

I actually researched this before I posted so I know about the coil conversion using 2.2 coils. I just dont want to use the stock ICM if I don't have to. To simplify my question, I'm just wondering if MSD makes an adjustable ICM/controller for the 2.2 MSD coils that will understand what my 2.4 ECM (plug going to stock ICM), is telling it, or am I pretty much stuck using a stock 2.4 or 2.2 ICM?

I posted the link to the thread for several reasons,

1. Wrench Monkey (Tom) is with team green, so you can use the thread to pm him.
2. the conversion kit was with MSD coils and modules. With a few weatherpak connectors you could use the DIS-2, MSD coils, MSD modules, etc.

As for the ICM, I have everything running through the OEM ICM, don't know of any after market one.

Hope it helps.

OK it turns out msd finally made a signal converter so we can run the dis-2 and what not easier, but considering the price, I'm just gunna put in some 2.2 mds coils with the stock ICM and call it a day for now.

I've tore apart my old coil pack and retrieved the plug and wires going from the icm to the coils. (the stock coil assembly is a pos). Someone posted a link to a site that tells you how to wire the msd coils to the stock icm plug (wires a, b, and c), not that long ago, but I can't remember who. Does anyone remember who it was or where I can find it. I'm planning on getting a stock coil mounting bracket for a 2.2, and a set of 2.2 msd coils. If I remember correctly, I should order a set of coils for a 96 2.2, is that right? Also, does the 2.2 coils ground through the mounting bracket?

If anyone that remembers where I can find this info, or just tell me everything I need to get, and how to wire it, please let me know. Thanx

signal converter? 2.4? wtf for?! sounds like you should stay away from your ignition system.

^^^ common dude, play nice

I'm probably using the wrong name for the converter or whatever, I'm tired right now so cut me a little slack.

I'm not used to working with EFI ignitions, but I've fiqured out (and been told), pretty much everything I need to know exept for how to wire the stock ICM harness to the coils, which I'm pretty sure I can fiqure out, but If I can't, you guys will know.

Wire A to both 12 volt connectors, wire B to the trip connector on the 2-3 (left) coil, and wire C to the trip on the 1-4 (second) coil. I just havn't fiqured out how they need to be grounded yet. Does anyone have a pic of the 2.4 ICM wiring going to the interface moduals? Also, I know the stock coils are grounded to the IDI cover, do the msd coils ground through their mounting bolts or something?

This work for the eco as well? I have the coils left over from my OHV motor.

Weebel your making it way harder then it needs to be. All 3 wires must be connected to the coils. A on the icm plug is ground, B is 2 and 3 and C is 1 and 4.

A wire must go both coils
B wire goes to the 2 and 3 coil
C wire goes to 1 and 4 coil.

As far as the internal wiring of the OHV icm i cannot say because they changed. Use a multimeter to find out what wires correspond to what and youll be set. If all else fails its possible i could make a few more coil conversions now that @!#$ has settled down with my new job and im finding more time away from work. BUT there will never be a gp.

^^ Thanx. I tend to overthink things more than I should. I'm sure once I get my hands on a set of 2.2 coils i'll see where the connections for the wires are, and I'll see how simple it is.

I'm planning on using my 2.4 ICM, so as long as I get the connections right to the coils, I'm guessing I should be fine.

I'll let ya all know if the car blows up or runs OK when it's done. Thanx for the info guys, soory I'm being difficult, I don't mean to be.

Wanted to toss this in -
I updated the wiring diagram given to me by Wrench Monkey (thanks BTW!)
Hope it helps -

Is that for the 2.4 or 2.2 ICM? Or does it matter?

That diagram is awesome.

Gary thats to make it possible to use the 2.4 icm basically just an extension of the stock stuff.

Thanks Tom. I might have to make the switch over.

Wrench - I've been wondering about the conversion using a coil setup using a 2.2 coils/ICM
I've looked at the wiring diagram for the 2.4 and the 2.2
They seem to be the same except for he 2.2 has the two plug setup and the ICM is on the bottom of the coils
So, am I right that it is a rewire job matching wire to wire?
Thanks - glad you liked the wiring diagram

Use the stock 2.4 ICM while using the abc wires coming off of the ICM to go to the MSD coil pack housings with the 2.2 coils attached.
It's not that hard.
I'd gone to the junkyard to get a connector off of a donor 2.4 ICM and made a harness that plugs into the cars ICM directly to the DIS coils. I still have the original plug on the IDI setup so I can convert it back to stock in minutes. You never know when you're going to be selling.

I have never understood why soo many people have had problems with the stock coils on a 2.4. With all the 2.4's I have owned I have only had one fail.
