valve train

I have another question, I have recently purchased the now not so secret cams for my wifs 99 sunfire gt. The motor has 145,500 km on it. Should I get the valve train replaced, or will the stock hold out? Also where can I find cam gears for this engine? Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Most suggest replacing lifters no matter the miles when replacing cams. Junk yard or any gm parts dealer for the gears. Only after market ones are the JBP adjustable ones.

You dont need to replace the valve train, I was the second one EVER to do the secret cam swap and there is no valve float or issues whatsoever. Replace the lifters. As well, I dont know what you plan to do with the cam gears, these cams are pretty mild, I kind of doubt retarding or advancing them are going to give you any more power.

what do you mean mild? not alot of performance gain from them? are they a worthwile mod or are different cams a better idea?- weary of tearing into a head for just 3 hp. sorry sky for jackin in but he sounds like a great source of actual information with this subject...

If I had to guess I would say 5hp and the cams move your power band up. Basicly you loose low end but you gain top end.

This is what I had done when I was running those cams:

Engine:

Custom intake with reactive cone
custom cold air scoop under bumper
59mm rsm TB
Redline Highflow muffler
GM underdrive Pulley
RSM Stage 3 head (just a good port and polish and shaved down for a 1/4 point more compression)
Stans Header (any good header will do)
21/2 inch mandrel bent custom cat back (this is important hwoever on a budget "crush bent" is good too)
RK Lower moter mount with soft Mak Pain bushings
RK Upper Incert
Casper fpr
Manta Spec Cams (secret cams)

You really have to look at it as a whole package, the cams, port and polished head, and the adjustable FPR gave me great gains (a little more fuel+ a little more air) I ran a load of 14.8s and some 14.6s on this set up. The advantage to the secret cams is cost. A good cam from COMP or some of the cam manufacturers are expensive, like 500$ a set, you can pick up secret cams at a junk yard. It really depends what your goals are. When I built my 2.4 I had no money, it was a fast car for being on a budget.

Im glad you pointed some things out to me, and actually i have decided against the swap due to the fact that i want to keep as much of my money in the power band that i need, stop-sign to stop-sign. im really just tying to augment all the low end the z has to offer and 50 some dollars spent towards the top end for a estimated 5hp just doesn't sound logical. thanks a bunch.

Honestly, if you can afford it, the best bang for the buck for low end grunt would be the supercharger kit. Pace performance parts http://paceperformance.com/index.asp?PageAction=PRODSEARCH 2195$ and free shiping to add 50 or so hp. Really its the most relyable 50hp you'll add to an LD9.
