Ported intake manifold question
Monday, October 01, 2007 5:38 PM
Is porting the stock intake manifold on the ld9 even worth doing? I did the HO intake swap on my 01 z and I have the old stock manifold laying around. I was considering porting it and throwing it on my 96 vert since its just laying there in my shed. I will eventually put on my bored out throttle body on it as well Im puttng a larger vortec throttle body on the 01. I have my old 2.4 head laying around too since I did the 086 swap on the 01. So eventually i was thinking about porting and polishing it and replacing the whole top end, maybe even some secret cams but Im not sure. But back to the topic, I have read about you guys porting the plastic manifold and just wondered if it was even worth messing with.

Not realy, and its a pita cause it burns up easily being plastic. Just pick up another 2.3 manifold for the vert

Yeah thats what I figured.

Thanks.

If you try porting it with one of the metal tips with a die grinder, then I could see it being a pain. If you used a sanding wheel, I'm sure it would be much easier and cleaner.

"Youth in Asia"...I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yea, I did a little bit to mine using a dremel with very soft sanding drum at low speed, but its still kinda melts the plastic. Plus plastic is very hard to smooth out and clean up the ports.

I just did mine for the hell of it realy, since I had it off and was going back on the car soon. You can try to remove as much material from the plenum and runners as you want, but its still the same design manifold. Just go with a 2.3 manifold

Good point Brian, I have to say thats the rout I would probably go. I have a bunch of those little sand paper bits laying around. I might just do it for somthing to do. I doubt it would be nearly as effective as the HO manifold or even an LO but its free and laying in my shed. I might just try it n let everyone know my butt dyno results. I Have an extra throttlebody too, might get that bored out like i did my other one, only cost $40 plus whatever to get an ecotec throttle blade from the Pick n pull. Im making my vert my budget buit daily driver performance project.

Like I said be careful with the platic because it melts easily, use a very soft sandpaper bit cause even they will burn up. Youll prolly go through alot of them since the plastic burns up and wraps around the bit, its not like metal where the material comes off in shavings lol. Good luck though, any free mod is a good mod

If you have a bunch of spare 2.4 parts off your z and can do some porting yourself you could have a very cheap budget lol. Port your spare 2.4 head,ho manifold, secret cams, coil swap, ebay ud pulley, and full exhaust and you could have a very cheaply built n/a daily driver. And if you have hptuners yourself you could do a little bit of tuning yourself. I just sold an ho manifold I had laying around for $30 shipped, I have a secret intake cam for cheap as well if you want one.

Ok thanks I will be careful. I was definitely gonna try to port my own head. Ive done it once before with a few friends who actually knew what they were doing. Dont think im quite ready to buy cams for it yet because I still have to do work on my 01(just discovered my mystery noise was a cracked flexplate) before I do too much to the vert. Thanks though.
