what happened to my crank?? eaten by eagle rods....
Thursday, October 11, 2007 3:28 PM
ok so here is my problem, i took apart my engine and found that the crank was all eaten by the rod. now i have too much sideplay on the rods. i know i need a new crank but i dont want this to happen again. all the main journal are good, only rods one are bad.
here is some pics of ehat i'm talking about:

you can see the sideplay and on the one taken apart, you can see that the rod eat the crank...
any help would be appreciate.
thanx

motor looks clean inside

cant say why that happened , other than either the bearings or something in the machine work wasnt done properly

Did you plastigage the bearings when you installed them?

yes, the bearing was fine. its the crank where the rods sit that is damage. from side to side. so now i have like 3/8" of sideplay on the rods and i should have 0.005-0.015"

Does the crank move side to side really easily?

no, all the main are good. crank doesn't move easily. only the rods journal are bad.
also i meant 3/16" not 3/8...

Does the rod move freely on the wrist pin (full float) or the wrist pin move freely in the piston (press fit to rod)?

the rod moves freely on the wrist pin.

how did you discover this problem?

my head was cracked and i wanted to be sure the bearing was allright so i took it all apart.

Assuming everything was installed correctly, and the rods move freely on the wrist pins, the only way I could see this happening would be if the thrust bearing/s were shot.

Did you have the crank machined when the engine was built?

The rods are kept in position on the journal by a chamfer ground on either side of the journal.I do not see one in the pics. This would cause the rod to come in contact with the crank throw and cause the wear shown.
The "Eagle rods" you used, being aftermarket ,may require a different chamfer than stock and the machine shop missed that or they ground the journals and missed regrinding the chamfer!I have run across this issue a few times over the years.
I would give your engine builder a call and ask him whats up! Good luck.

Regards
Mike

when i built the engine, i bought a reground crank with new bearings.
the machine where my block is right now have no idea of what happened. hence why i'm asking for help here.
now as for the chamfer you are talking about... i'm not sure what you are saying. i'm french lol.
do you have pics of that? just so i could point that out to the machine shop and finally solve the problem and run the car for the last month before snow ;(
thanx for helping.

There should be a beveled edge and the side of the rod that matches the beveled edge on the crank.

ok, so the machine shop would need my rods to machine the crank correctly. and when done correctly, the rods shouldn't touch the crank on the side like it did?
thanx

^^^^^Pistons installed 180 out on the rod, or rods installed wrong. Seen this on v8's.

4 cylinders don't have that problem, since we only have one rod per journal there is a bevel on each side. The rod is symmetric.

ok so that means that when they reground the journal, they took off the beveled edge and now i need a new crank with bevel edge that match my eagle rods right?
thanx

where your pistons installed correctly? I know my JE's could be installed either way, but my Wiseco's where directional.

where the rod end caps installed correctly (right direction)?

you sure the thrust sides of the #3 main bearing are fine? that the crank wasnt walking back and forth?

i went to 3 different machine shop today finally. and they told me that they couldn't do anything, they dont know. the end play i have with a new crank is .020. they told me that i cant get lower end play than that with these rods... we tried with many different crank and all same result around .020 of endplay.
wtf is going on???

can you take a pic of your bottom side of the motor with all the main caps with #'s showing?
