National back order...
Friday, January 18, 2008 4:31 PM
I tried ordering new retainers for my head rebuild, but gmpartsdirect.com canceled the order due to a national back order. My question is with 160,000+ miles on the stock retainers, can I reuse them. Or, is there an alternate set of retainers i.e. 2.3l? Thanks.

I have all new parts except the retainers but the stock retainers seem to be unavailable. Can i use 2.3 retainers with 2.4l springs? I want to get my cams in and my head done asap. Any help as to where to get the retainers would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go to Napa and tell them you need a set of 2.4l quad valve retainers for a 96-02 cavalier.

They will have them or can order them i promise you.

NAPA said that they do not have any available and that they are a dealer only part. Called the dealer and they are $105 for a set and they are no longer available. They can complete an order but they have to come from like 4 different dealers from around the country. Any one else running into this problem? Again, will 2.3l retainers work on 2.4l springs?

Retainers are not something that normally wears out, locks and springs yes, but retainers no. Unless they are damaged or gone, just reuse the retainers if your using stock (replacement) springs. Definitely get new locks though.

Thanks for the help. I will probably reuse the stockers as they are still ok. Already ordered the locks and yes, I am using stock replacement springs. Thanks for the responses.
