V-12 in a second Gen
Thursday, January 24, 2008 11:35 AM
I have this V-12 long block in my garage and I am debating putting it in my '92 Sunbird. I would have to lengthen the frame to fit the block as well as replace the trans-axle with a transmission and all that goes with it. It's a lot of work, but I think it would be worth it for a V-12.
Thoughts?

It would be unique thats for sure. But you also have to think about how much heavier that engine is gonna be compared to the stock engine. Then you have to make your car rear wheel drive... Oh and figure out the motor mounts. I would say if you want to go fast just boost it.

Boost the V-12. Anyway if you have the know-how and experiance go for it.

See, I don't much care for the speed aspect of it, I have a Trans Am for that, I just want my car to be unique. The real question is: do you think it is feasible, keeping in mind that the car already needs a new front end after an accident.

also: by trans-axle to transmission I was referring to front wheel to rear wheel drive. I am also thinking that I need to upgrade the suspension.

Besides the lengthening of the frame, also need to make it stronger.

Suspension will need to be AMAZING to handle that

Brakes - gonna need a MAJOR overhaul

Engine wiring, best of luck with that

Transmission and Motor mounting..... yea.

Actually converting the FWD to RWD.... another project that wont be easy.

All in all, if you have the knowhow, then go ahead. But I am willing to bet this is another project that wont be even started, let alone completed

To be honest, it probably won't be ever done. I also don't remember ever promising that it would be. As I said in the very beginning: I am DEBATING. I have to rebuild from the windshield forward anyway, and I was trying to think of something unique to do to her rather than just fix her.

v12 is probably out of a jaguar. I highly doubt he bought a lambo v12 or any of the other high performance v12s cause that would be a waste to put it in a cavy. I say its not worth it. Way too much work for what your wanting to accomplish, cause in the end its still only a cavalier.

A jag engine? Yecch! Don't even bother. They're what, 4.7 liters or so? Guys with jags pull the V12 and install a smallblock Chev to get something with power and reliability.

Now if you really want to do something unique...

He lists a BMW 720IL as one of his cars and it has a 5.0L V-12. Im guessing thats where the engine came from.
