So I ordered the cam install tool for my ecotec. I put my comp stage one cams on today and had everything put back together...I go to fire it up and it doesnt turn over....Its acting like it wants to but it doesnt.........Anyone have any suggestions or advice???? Thanks
You messed something up.
What do you mean it's acting like it wants to turn over?
You didn't mix up the cam caps did you?
ur batt still have power?
please explain more about what is happening, there could be many many reasons, and different situations
did you plug in the icm?
(coil pack on top of engine)
its almost impossible to mess up the cam install if you have the tool
ok so after I put everything together and went to start the car........The dome light flickers and the car sputters .....the exhaust makes a back fire type sound.....it sounds like its so close to starting then it doesnt...it sounds like the timing is just a hair off but how can that be possible because during the whole installation the gears didnt move at all
oh and idk if this matters but I put in new spark plugs too while I was doing the cam install....thought it might help for something if you guys knew that lol
Take the valve cover off and take a look at your cams. Sounds like you didn't tighten the cam gear bolts enough and they came loose. It's happened to many people.

Not possible on the ecotec. One cam is longer than the other because it drives the power steering pump.

something is definitely amiss.
the car shoulda started right up after getting the cams in. something is not inplace, or something is damaged.

I don't really see how that matters either. The gears are both the same and so are the bolts, because the key-way is offset you can't install them wrong.
My vote is for dead battery, ICM not plugged in, or you didn't tighten the bolts down enough and spun the gears (cams stayed in place).
If your dome light is flickering it could be a bad ground, check your battery connection.

Damn, what was the reason behind this.. Since the post was brought back up..

posibly the ground that goes from cam cover to head?

swapped, supercharged, intercooled, 2.9, fun
Me and my buddy just had this problem on this focus we were working on, the person who installed the cams didnt have them set in on the right stroke, so we pulled the plug on # 1 cyl and made sure it was at TDC, then we undid the belt (Chain in your case) from the cam gears and spun the crank one revolution until #1 came back to top dead center. We then put the belt back on and aligned the timing marks and it fired right away, Hope this helps a little
if the motor spins and the cams dont = valve train destruction
