This is probably stupid to ask but if these are both DOHC motors then which one has more advantages or potential? I have heard that the LD9 is a high compression motor from stock and that the ECOTEC is lower compression. I know this means it would be easier to boost the ECO but does that necessarily mean that the ECO is better or that the LD9 is intended to run N/A only? I guess the main thing I need to know is depending on the ways you could go with each motor which is better N/A and which is better Boosted.
If im not mistaken the Eco has 10:1 compression while the LD9 has 9.5 or 9.7:1 depending on the year. I have an LD9 and would never even consider swapping to an Eco simply because they are both capable motors and thats a lot of work. If you already have one or the other it isnt really worth switching. The main benefit of the Eco is the large amount of aftermarket support. Us LD9 guys have to be creative sometimes to hang in there with the Eco guys. I wouldnt say either is better for boost or N/A as far as the engine is concerned, both can be built strong and handle alot. Although the gm super charger reflash for the LD9 works with HPtuners while the Eco reflash doesnt so it is a little more tuner friendly which gives the LD9 some points in the boost category. It takes a little more work finding parts for the LD9 sometimes like a good set of cams, but there isnt any thing you can do with one of these motors that you cant do with the other. It all depends on what your goals are and how deep your pockets are.
There have been more than few of these topics recently...
I just bought a 2000 Sunfire GT with a blown engine
its getting ECO this weekend i don't want to deal with most of the BS from the 2.4's had too many problems in the past with 3 waterpumps and rod bearings
Ok. i am sorry the 2.4 is not a good motor. people play like it is but it isn't.
Yes you can build it to be very fing strong. yes it is fast from the factory. it has a lot of junk yard parts availible..
But the sad fact is the oil system is complete BS. The ignition has hichups Crappy water pump placement.
crappy head gaskets crappy water pump and its a heavy cast iron pig. Defend it if you must It is just not a great motor. lets face it
the people with over a 150,000 on the stock water pump and no blown motor a lucky.
The eco is not a great motor either it has flaws just like every other motor. theirs hichups
with broken chains and ring lands. it doesn't flow as much air as the old 2.4.
But the simple fact is hand in hand it is much more reliable motor weighs less
and has a huge aftermarket compared to the 2.4. And the motor from a junk yard
can be had for under 250 complete. most 2.4's go for three times that much.
face the music every day more 2.4's die and more eco's roll over the 100,000 mile marker.
the 2.4 was a record fail in my eyes on gm's part. And i honestly loved my LD9.
when are the LD9 vs Ecotec threads gonna end?

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
when all the ld9's are in museums, hiden away in obscure garages and junk yards.
