Ok, i made the mistake of getting carried away when i first started my build and not really putting in any concideration of how high of lift i'd like to run with my turbo 086 build. so i bought my pistons about a year ago and they still aren't installed or anything but will be within the next 2 months unless i decide otherwise.
But onto my question. I got the 9:1 Wiseco dished pistons with plans on running secret cams, but after careful thought i'm swaying towards HO or comp cams to accomidate my GT3071R. Is it possible to go have valve reliefs cut into my pistons NOW without problems if i can find a machine shop to do so?
Or is this a 1-time deal meaning it can only ben done from the factory while the pistons are being made.
No bashing on my idiocy. i realise i made a dumb move.
Help is much appreciated. Thanks.
depends on the thickness of the piston , but keep in mind cutting them on a piston not made for them your making the piston have different thicknesses in areas not designed for it , and that will allow the section cut to be a different temp and more prone to having problems down the road
its best to have them done with the cuts from the maker , also check with the maker and see if they approve cutting
how high a lift are you going? are you sure you'll need valve reliefs? keep in mind, I know zilch about the LD9, but i'd imagine you'd need a pretty wicked cam to need valve reliefs cut into the pistons if the manufacturer didn't see a need for it.

2.4 block with 086 head? or 2.3 block with 086 head?
2.4 block 086 head.....but it doesn't matter seeing as the LGO and LD9 have the same 0 deck hight.

HO cams have a large amount of lift and a fair duration. In the LGO's the HO motors all had valve reliefs on their high comp pistons. i'm running low comp pistons, but i'm getting my deck milled and running a .074" thick head gasket to help with the compression as well. i know i need valve reliefs for sure if i want to run HO cams.
my question was "is it possible/safe to cut the valve pockets into my aftermarket low comp wiseco pistons that didn't come with them to begin with."
This way i don't need to go purchase another set of $800 pistons only this time with valve pockets from the manufactuer.
I may throw my 086 head on my current bottom end with some .430 cams but my 9.5:1 pistons were made with huge valve releifs.
my 10.5:1 comp 2.4l pistons have massive domes they also have large valve pockets.
I just did valve clearances and there should be enough clearance to run HOs on stock pistons. But since i clearanced with customs pistons i can't tell you 100%
Only why to really tell if they will clear is to check clearances with the HOs and you pistons.
First thing I would do id clay the top of the pistons and see what kind of clearance you have.
Second thing I would do is if you don't have the clearance buy new pistons with reliefs and sell the old ones..... consider the 250-300 dollars lost a lesson learnt.
I would not cut into a forged piston, different thinkness' are going to yield different temperatures. Nobody except the manufacturer can tell you if the piston can be cut and will keep its integrity. Why chance blowing up your motor for a couple hundred dollars?

....shat....well if i can't run straight HO's i'll run HO exhaust and 95 intake at least. i'm about 90% sure the exhaust will at least have enough clearence.
unless i can't find a buyer that is.
anyone within the GTA need 9:1 dished pistons with a .020" overbore, pm me and we'll talk. i'll drive them out to you personally for free.
..ok i didn't mean the pistons are free lol, i mean no shipping charges. just to clarify.
ok i got an e-mail back from Wiseco finally and here is how the whole thing went down:

Subject: GM LD9 2.4L DISHED 9:1 K584M905
Hello, i just have a question about the K584M905 GM LD9 2.4L 9:1 .020" overbored Dished Piston kit. I bought my piston kit already but have decided to run a higher lift of cam and need valve reliefs. Would it be safe to get the valve pockets cut into these already dished pistons by a machine shop, or is there not enough materal and would it risk to much heat on the pistons. I'm looking to run upwards of 300 Wheel Horsepower with these pistons, if this information helps any.
Thanks

it's safe to cut valve pockets into them, they are very thick in the crown area, but the question is where and how deep. We've not done a true LD9 valve pocket. Per request, we've done customs versions before using quad 4 valve pocket locations...which is something I could give you measurement locations for if you believe the two heads are similar "enough". If you mock assemble the engine and use dykem and clay, it will also give you a good idea of what needs to be done.
