So yesterday the lil OHV gave out... threw a rod right out the side of the block. I haven't pulled the motor yet but my current suspicions lead me to be oil related, to cause it to spin a bearing.
I know it could not have been due to detonation, as the AFRs have been perfect as well as HPT has not shown 1 degree of KR since I tuned it. It has been running better than it ever has, until yesterday.
Im not sure if the oil pump gave out, or either partially, or solely due to heat causing the oil to lose some of its lubrication properties. My engine bay runs on the hot side as well as it was a pretty hot day.
Im just brainstorming all possibilities before I pull the block, which I may start 2morrow. I certainly want to avoid running into the same problem with the 2nd block. Planning on adding an oil cooler and a better oil pump. Anyone have any suggestions on a good pump to put in?
Luckily I have a spare block, Skwirly's first heart, to throw in and re-unite it with the head thats in the car right now

So the Kav will be running with 100% of the Skwirl's first heart, maybe thats just what it wanted?
I forgot to add.... when this happened I was cruising down the highway at 70-75MPH, at MAYBE 5% throttle, barely touching it when it happened.
My 2.4 did the exact same thing. Never did figure out why.
Possibly the head wants its old body back
Anywho. For a better oil pump, I believe the older versions of the 2.2 OHV, around '92-'93 had a higher volume oil pump that will work on the 2200.
Theres a few threads on that one, Im not sure about an aftermarket pump at all.
Good luck with the rebuild
**You wouldnt attribute it to the noises you heard it making would you? -- the lifter clacking? -- I ask because mines been making noise for a while, trying to make the call on how soon to fix the noises.
How many miles on the block?
cant wait to see some pics come up, as far as the oil pump question: I was told by Madjack to go with an earlier version oil pump from the older LN2, i wanna say pre-93 but im not quite sure exactly. I'll look it up and get back to you.
Ok I will look into those oil pumps, i do recall hearing that before, TY for the reminder
As far as the sound it started making a few months ago, I really don't think it was related at all. It REALLY sounded like it was coming from the head, and I believe it was just the valvetrain "breaking" in. As it does not have any stock components in it, other than the rockers and they were all fairly new. I was worried it was a lifter based purely on reading, but I had never heard it in person so It was hard to guess.... SlowoleJ listened to it and said it did not sound at all like a lifter as well as he said it wasn't nearly as loud as most OHVs he's heard... as they tend to be a tappy sounding motor. And i certainly respect his judgment when it comes to these engines. So I was just being a lil over worried 'mom'
This block has 58k miles, and I turboed it at 50k.
I will post the pics up once i start tearing it apart and ill keep em in this thread so keep checking back
sucks jess.. couldn't be at a worse time =\
turbo eco
at least then u crack the ringlands instead of rods and you can still drive it around lol
As far as eco is concerned, I do not blame the OHV for merely being an OHV, lack of oil due to oil pump failure (which is my #1 guess) would cause a spun bearing on any engine silly

I believe a semi-similar situation caused ur baby to break too o.O maybe you should go turbo OHV! <3<3
Well, Its good to hear that the sound didnt cause it.
It still stinks though. If I were closer I'd offer an extra hand putting the other block in the car. Though, its an OHV, so it shouldnt take that long

.
Get it fixed, get us pics, and keep on boostin'
Maybe Ill get my turbo on the car soon

haha

cracked oil pan yes tis a sad fact of life failure is failure.
no reason for me to downgrade tho
The oil pump went on Chris's sunfire at the shop too after it was turbo'd the first season...
Got a melling HV in there now and its fully built and balanced.
lol PJ and I were just messing with each other
So, this failure could have happened boost or not, correct? Yeaa for having a spare block. Good luck!
sry to hear bout the block but at least you got a spare rdy and i am curious about what went bad
RIP JESSE GERARD.....Youll always be in my thoughts and prayers...

More likely than not, boost wasn't related at all. If it blew up while racing or under heavy throttle, I'd look at it differently, but just cruising, and the fact that it threw the rod instead of just cracking a piston ringland (really the only power-related failure I've ever seen on an OHV) tells me the oil pump or something else took a dump which blocked the flow.

If your pump failed, you should've had an oil light on, though. You'll know as soon as you pull the oil pump out if it's seized or not. We couldn't even turn mine whatsoever, it was so bad.
oil pressure gauge? checked your registry and didnt see one. if you did, wouldnt that have been a good indicator?
My Z just recently threw a rod, i was also cruising down the highway. my oil pressure was fine, but i still threw the rod. when i pulled the engine i found that my wrist pin got stuck and forced the piston into the side of my cylinder. i have a few pics of the damage if anyone is interested.

no oil light came on but this is why we call them dummy lights....
Unfortunately it was bad timing on the Kav's part, we have the engine out of our SS for a rebuild so the block will be going in stock for now, and i will be continuing my plan which was to start the bottom end build once we finish up the SS.
lets see the carnage pics!
