ECU info
Monday, May 12, 2008 6:12 PM
Hi,
Does anyone know where the ECU is located on an 03 cavalier LS coupe? I am asking because I have heard people talking about proformace chips being added to their ECU's. I have heard that by ugrading it it can give more hp. Is this true? I guess I know nothing about that computerized unit and I am just looking for some information on what it really does and how it works.

Thanks
Kpack

Its on the passenger side front strut mount. You cannot "chip" it anyway. Its an OBD 2 and can only be flashed. OBD 1 systems can be "chipped", but they were phased out in 1995.

What do you mean when you say "Its an OBD 2 and can only be flashed." What does that do to the engine?

the OBD 2 system doesnt use chips in order to store the software, it's an integral part of the computer. you have to actually erase and replace the software (flash) in order to change anything. the most common way of doing (on our platform) is with a program called HPTuners. there is no chip for your car.

The hp you would gain from flashing or tuning your ECU would be minimal w/o other mods. If your wanting to more hp out of your ecotec, i would start with an intake, full exhaust, header, and engine and tranny mounts. Even after those mods you would have a need for the ECU tuned.

Have any idea on how much those mods will cost?

Thanks

They would cost less than the amount that you'll pay for HPtuners.

I saw the cost for the hp tuner is 649 (Professional - $649) on their website. Is it worth it to get that or is it better to do all the hardware upgrades?
