2.2 - 2200 Head Interchange?????
Tuesday, June 17, 2008 6:23 AM
Im thinking about buying a built head for my 00 Cav, but I noticed in pics that the driver side of the head is different from pre 00 to post 00. Has anyone swapped an older head on a newer motor? If so, was there any extra fabrication work needed, and pics would be helpfull.

Thanks in advanced!

Are you possibly looking at one the has an EGR??

or are you thinking of the 98-older 2.2L motors?

Exactly ..... will the head with egr fit and work correctly on a 00+ motor? What modifications are needed?

If you mean will a 2200 head that has an EGR setup work for another 2200 motor w/o it...yes, you just need the EGR block off plate.

I am sure that is something just as easily made by you than purchased.

Yes I could probablly make something. Do you know any place that sells them, so I could get an idea? Also I know what EGR is (exhaust gas recirculation) but what "exactly" is it? What does it involve? What come out of the port in the head?

The block off plate can be had from GM, as they put it on the cars that did not get the EGR valve. As well as the gasket, but I dont remember part numbers.

The EGR system involved the EGR valve, tube, ind intake port.....which btw you will need to see if you have a big hole in your intake as well, it is in the front of the plenum.

thats basically it. I am sure there is an electronic/vacuum switch for the EGR valve, but I am not familiar with it since I dont have it.

Will the 2200 ICM backing plate work for the EGR plate? I have 2 2200 Intake manifolds, and they both have a casting below the throttle body, about 1", but its not knocked out. I assume that where it would be if I had EGR. Correct? So an older 2.2 head with EGR, would need the coils and ICM to be re-mounted somewhere if used on a 2200. Right?

I think we are talking 2 different things here.

No, the ICM bracket wont work, bot the block off plate is similar to that.

There are more differences between the 2.2, and 2200 head.

2.2 is older than 98, is that what you are trying to use??

or do you have a 2200 head that has an EGR?

Im planning on putting a 2.2 head with egr on a 2200 block with 2200 top end and bottom end. What would be the differences?

there is a thread floating around with the specifics, but it requires tons of work, and will aparently give you some uber high....probably to high compression. It is not a simple bolt on and cover up the EGR hole deal.

DAMN

yeah, coolant ports dont line up....obvious intake differences, exhaust ports.....all kinds of stuff is off that would require TONS of re-work.

Requires 97- headgasket, I/E manifolds, coolant plumbing, coil pack bracket (or relocation), injector harness, valvetrain, and....pistons
97- head and 98+ block is something like 14:1 compression.
