2.4 BUILD- I searched- Want Opinions

OK, so I think a valve in my head is shot, or a lifter. Either way its time to do the build. I am looking for a lot of advice on what to do and what not to do. I dont want to have the car so it runs like poop. It has to run good and strong. I I dont want any parts that will make the car brake faster, or dumb @!#$ like that. With that said, I would like peoples opinion on their builds for the 2.4. I am thinking for the bottom end, eagle rods, forged pistions, clevite bearings and casting flash removed. I am not sure I want to do the 2.3 swap conversion as I dont have much time anymore and that seems like a very big project. Next to the head. I have read that people use the 2.3 lifters and springs, now can I use the 2.4 valves with that. Or should I just stick with a 2.4 head and 2.4 springs? The cams I bought, the HO cam swap or secrete swap.

Now with the build I am going to replace the clutch, flywheel and other maintaince items, like waterpump, timing chain, etc. Would you guys suggest anything else.

As far as rings go, what rings are you using, and where do I get them from? same with bearings.

Well If I just wanted a fun all around DD use engine I would build as follows:

Stock crank
Forged rods
Clevite bearings
10:1 pistons (probably forged because they dont really cost that much more than quality cast)
2.3 oil pump swap
ported 2.4 head (provided I could find some one to do it)
HO cams
2.3 springs
2.3 retainers (you can use 2.4 retainers)
2.4 keepers
2.3 exhaust cam housing
2.4 intake housing modified for the 2.3 lifters and cam
stock flywheel
4-1 header
2.5 exhaust
HO intake
56mm TB
30 P/H injectors

I ran that basic engine for a while. I had to run the HO intake as the car fell flat on its face at 4500 RPM with a stock intake mani. It was reliable, decently pepy, fairly fuel efficient, and responded well to 7.5 PSI from a S/C. I will probably rebuild that basic engine with the exception of different cams, 370cc injectors, and 9.5:1 CR instead of 10:1.

Well this is also my car to use on the weekends for Auto-x. Would that be able to handle it??

So if I do the secret cam swap I have to get the hosuings as well. As far as the 2.3 springs, are there preformance ones out there?

You obviously didn't search hard enough. All of these answers are out there in multiple threads.

You have not read enough. There is a sticky about the secret cams. You can use the stock 2.4 housing's, lifter's, springs, etc.. with the secret cams. If you are going to build a motor I would say do more than the secret cams. I feel they are a waste of time and money.

How did you come about feeling this?

Did you install them and put your car on the butt dyno? I'm pretty damned sure the secret cams are a worthy upgrade.

I failed at quoting and can't edit. Limiting editing to premium members is a poor idea. -_-

I have them installed, and per the butt dyno they made a hugh difference!!!!! Per the real dyno I gained 6 whp on the cams and header and complete exhaust. Yes it is a gain, but not what people say they are worth, or what you think they are worth when you install them.

I also agree with you on the edit function.

OK, sounds good. Well I think that the 2.3 oil pump swap is to much, but everything else I can do. I already have a fidanza flywheel so thats good. Now if I later decide to put a supercharger on it, what kind of pistions would be best for NA/Boost. Obviously stock can handle the boost, so what are they.

Where do I get the springs from, and is it really worth it. Do I have to do any tuning? I know that I can get the valves and valve guides from TTR. What about the bearings??

Haha, wow that is surprising. I expected 10-15 with the hype they have.

If you want a cheap no modification set of cams for just daily driving go with the secret cams. I dont feel its worth it to go through all the work to install just the secret cams, but if your building the motor then yea.

If you go with more agressive cams and plan on racing the car I would recomend the 2.3 oil pump swap. It looks liek a lot more work than it really is and i feel it is well worth it. If you ae doing a rebuild and have plans for boost in teh future I would suggest going with forged pistons. Your stock pistons are hyperutecnic (sp) according to what I have been told by GM. You may want to find a stok flywheel to keep around if you plan on using the Fidanza one. You can use 2.4 springs with HO cams. I would advise against going a whole lot higher than stock rev limit with teh 2.4 springs though. I ran then fine for a while but eventualy swaped to 2.3 springs just to be sure. Currently the 2.3 springs are holding up to 7500 RPM and .430 lift, although I have only put maybe 200 miles on teh car since last Nov. (it has needed a new bottom end for about a year).

I would definately do the 2.3 oil pump swap unless you want to do the rebuild again, because if you port the head and install bigger cams for more power you are going to exceed the rpm limit of the stock oil pump/balance shafts and starve the engine of oil and spin the bearings.

with my current cams I have the limiter set to 7500. I would not be doing this with a stock pump. I dont know if I need that much RPM but it does feel like it is still doing well up there. I may find out before I rip apart the motor again.
