new here, i just bought a '92 Sunbird 3.1, 5-speed..I bought the car as a beater to get back and fourth to work, but after screwing around in it so far the car has owned the following: (remember this is a BONE stock 3.1 144,000 miles)
1.) 3.1 beretta (bus length)
2.) 1999 5.9 Cummins Ram2500 (two stacked chips 300rwhp) close race
3.) 2001 Crown Vic (ex cop car) 5+cars
4.) 1999 Civic Si...VEE-TEEECK bus length
5.) 2000Sunfire GT aloso 5+cars
so through curiosity, i had to take this thing to the track (mainly because the fastest 3.1 i've seen was 16.3) First pass was a decent launch hit all the gears but i was modest with rpm's pulls a 15.66@86.20mph....the second and final pass was a great launch, i shifted around 5600rpms with no lift shifts, and pulled a 15.54@87.01mph
I'm not bragging, nor am i proud of this car, i have a 10.50 S-10(sbc) i bracket race, so i don't think this car is fast either, i'm just wanting to know if i have a "factory freak" on my hands...whats the fastest factory 3.1 quarter mile times that you fellas have heard??? i figured this would be the forum to ask..thanks

Your kill list and the length you say you beat them by means nothing to us. Your 1/4 mile times seem to be exactly what I would expect. FYI you would have better luck posting this in the racing or second generation forum.

reading owns you, the 1/4 mile times are posted, the kills were the reasoning in taking it to the track....look/\

Whoa ease up there. It looks like reading owned you and now I am about to own you as well.
A I know you posted your 1/4 mile times. I read that. Why do you think I said "Your 1/4 mile times seem to be exactly what I would expect"
B I don't care why you took it to the track. I was just saying that your kill list means nothing to us. WTF is so hard to understand about that.

a 15.5 from an old 3.1 is pretty decent actually.

numbers are not too bad, first time out this year in my 93 cavalier RS (3.1, 5spd) bone stock with 300,000km's on it (original engine/trans) and nailed out a couple of 15.3 @ 88MPH passes. needless to say i went home happy!

C'mon, 15.5 isn't fast

but seriously... it sounds like you know how to drive the car properly - congratulations!
I wouldn't call that a factory freak - that's what they're supposed to do. Most people are just incapable of driving their cars to the max without breaking them. The 3.1L's are pretty bulletproof tho...

15.6 @ 86 with my old 94 Z24 5 speed.......

well sh!t, ive had SEVERAL 2.8, 3.1, 3100 cars and none of them felt as fast as my 97z and it ran a 15.4. so i think a 15.5 is damn good for a completely stock car with an old motor, but lets be honest here, the 60 degree v6 is just getting broken in at 150,000 miles
No way man, the 2nd gens FEEL way faster, with the 185 or so Ft\Lbs... but there not as fast. but they FEEL fast.
660's FTW when it comes to lasting long...now the 3X00's Intake's on the other hand.......FTL

the uppers like to crack under the "3X00" logo.
spray it down with carb cleaner and see were its at.

3100's and 3400"s wih the sfi feul injection are real good motors. They can get good MPG's if you don't race them around.
the early 2.8's and 3.1's with the mpfi are could too just not as powerful as the newer ones.
I've got an old '88 Chevy Celebrity with the 2.8 (150,000 miles and one of the quietest 60 degree V6s I've heard), and it's a decent running little car for what it is considering the TH440. Don't drive it too hard, and in reality they're torquey enough you don't have too. Had someone in a Honda whip out from behind me coming up to a redlight, and needless to say I flat out left him when the light turned green. Squalled the tires pretty good too.
If the LN2 ever lets go in the Cav I'll be going for a 3100/3400 swap after driving the Celebrity.
