Got my ECOTEC custom ground Colt Cams installed, no tune yet. Running Rich or Lean?

Hey,

Finally got my cams installed today. The car runs fine and can tell its pulling more in higher RPMS. Couldn't make it to the tuning shop in time Going to be using HPT. However, the car smells rich and is stalling out on me at Idle, which I expected. My cam specs are:

Intake: 265 degrees duration @ 0 lift
Exhaust: 262 degrees duration @ 0 lift
Lift: 0.394" on both cams
Power band: 4500-8000 rpm

Thought I would notice a much bigger difference but know I will once the car gets tuned with all current bolt ons and now cams!

The question is: Is my car getting too much fuel not enough air or vica versa? I was thinking about unpluging the fuel line from the intake manifold to see if the car will dump in more fuel now in case I have not enough? Not sure and curious.

Thanks

Sounds Like could be running a bit on the rich side..You will notice more once you have tuning done..

now, were these a replacement cams? or did you ship off your own cams to get re-ground?

your idle is probably very rich but you are probably very lean in the power band and when you are in PE

So its rich at idle because of less vaccuum right? And lean in PE because of the increased airflow? I'm trying to understand what needs to be done to the ECU to accomodate cams as well - looking at comp stage one in the future.

BTW, that seems like a very mild increase in lift (if at all). are you sure it makes power to 8k rpm?

I have the tri flows..And they are great..From my findings so far it makes power from 3200 all the way to 6800..But I still have to do more tuning with HP tuning...The stock valve train is good for about 7400 I belive.. I set my redline to 7100 and I rairly ever take it thet high..But as I stated before the stock injectors are to small when you start pulling at higher RPMS..And Also nick these cams are from LZM,Level Zero Motorsports..

i had cams similiar to yours that I tested for colt a long time ago... youre all sorts of screwed up in the ecu.. I am almost sure youre timing is way low to being so lean, youre running rich at idle due to vacuum issues and as soon as you get a good tune let us know...

But i hope you plan on investing in a head soon

These are GM blanks that were custom ground at COLT. Sounds about right, rich at idle and lean on high RPMS. Well tuning is set for this Saturday. I bought a set of 39lb/hr Cobalt SS injectors when I get the car tuned. I thought an almost .4 inch lift is pretty agressive? Will definitely let you guys know on Sat once its tuned! lol....I would like to get the head all done soon. Next on the list. I did just put in new spark plugs. Do you think the running rich at idle will slowly deteriorate my new spark plugs??? Lets say within a week? I don't want to get a tune done with spark plugs that aren't good anymore. Know what I mean? Unless the tuning will let me know of all that? Then I can replace em at the shop.

Thanks

You should be ok..But rember running rich will wash the cylinder walls down..Which is bad....so if I were you just try not get to far into the high rpms..because you run lean thats going to suck..So take it easy till you get the tune done..Also with the green tops make sure you get the clips that go with them..The factory ones are difffernt..best of luck..

Thanks for the tip. I drive hard all the time! Will take it easy. I believe I have the clips, thanks. Also, want to get some gauges? Air/fuel and oil pressure? Since I now have cams, and more fuel/air after tuning, the air/fuel gauge makes sense I guess. Recommend anything else?

try raising your idle rpm, that will help you run cams better at idle, prob will need a full new VE tune

Just do the tune and all will be good..If you get the HP tuning done you should not really need the AF Guage..But to each there own..Also when you get the tuning done find out if the will do free retuning when you do different mods or if they are charging you evertime...And if you want more with your NA Set up..Get the Balance shaft delet kit..

I wouldn't bother with a NB a/f gauge...get a wideband, even if you're not boosted...a NB will not do much for you...

Are you running stock injectors? If so your IDC might be pretty high. I know with my stage 2s rose my duty cycle up i'm switching to LSJs and a new tune. Just some food for thought.
