i have recently bought a 2002 cavi with 76k on it and the stock 2.4 has a bad knock and apperently there is a hole in a cylinder. my ? is should i get an updated engine (2.2 ecotec) or find another 2.4? and i would also like to mod this car so better buy 2.2 or 2.4?
eco cost more and would take more work to put in..i would stay with the 2.4 personally
where did you see this? i didn't otherwise i wouldn't have asked. what is the heading?
the 2.2 would take more work, but it depends on how heavy your going to mod it..the eco's are way easier to find parts for...and ive realized asking about the engine swap on jbody is a touchy subject..lol..
lol yeah, well i dont really know what i want to all do to it yet maybe turbo? or supercharger? and the basics for sure (intake...)
I love my 2 Ecotec 2.2s, but I would not sink that much money into making such a swap unless your goal is to make the most power possible. The two engines are almost the same performance in stock form.
The 2.4 has one advantage, Crate Engine Depot.
They have the supercharger kit for only $1500, and I grit my teeth every time I go to their site as I see them still wanting $2500 for the supercharger for the Ecotec.
Have your engine rebuilt for boost and pop on the supercharger from CED.

Quick sidetrack here...
How much more does the 2.4 weigh compared to the 2.2 Ecotec?
Also, isn't the Ecotec have an aluminum block vs the 2.4 having an iron block?

^^ the eco fully dressed is around 360-380lbs its one of the lightest engines GM has ever produced.
the eco is full aluminum with iron cylinder sleeves.
the M45 for the 2.4 is junk IMO, the M62 is better but still not worth it unless the OP is looking for pure reliability.
eco swap wouldn't cost much, but may be beyond the scope of the OP.
this is almost addressed weekly.. someone needs to make an objective sticky about the matter and be done with it.

Ok, i was thinking of rebuilding the 2.4 but since i have never build a car before i was wondering what brand pistons, valves, rockers, cams, i should use and with the cams would there be some tuning that i would have to do to the car or is there a chip that would do it or what? I am new at this and i want to do it right.
Oh and do you think i would be better to get the supercharger or turbo?
it all depends on your final goal you need to think about what you want from your car before you do anything then READ some of the stickies
