Piston Clearance- Wiseco
Tuesday, September 30, 2008 3:29 PM
I am about to put my pistons in my motor and was checking the block to make sure it was bored ok. I am getting around .0035 clearance on a 20 over bore. I am reading the Wiseco install page and it says that it should be .0025. I am measuring with a dial bore gauge. Also using Brown and Sharpe tools, not junk. Does anyone know if thats ok?

Thats a little much. I called wiseco, they said with a .0035 clearance thats ok, its a little better for racing application. If you have .005 I would think that you would have piston slap at start up. You might wanna get that fixed or you could ruin the pistons. He did say any thing over 220F will destroy the pistons as well. Might need a bigger radiatior.

piston slap at start up is common with forged pistons, the aluminum grows at a different rate then cast aluminum while heated so thats why you get it.

whatever you do just make damn sure the clearances are correct or you WILL be buying new pistons. wiseco's DO NOT like to be squeezed.

UH OH...You've angered the Ben. Now I have to try and cage him again. Damn you.....I had his anger and craziness in check with thoughts of boost too. Time for a stronger prescription I think.

Ben...take 2 GT42Rs and call me in the morning LOL.

Weird though that he got upset from FAST2.4 P providing him with information straight from Wiseco; he's just tryin to help. But since Ben revs to 8000+ his clearances must be awesome. The spec is irrelevant to his setup.

Actually I bet he got upset when FAST told him that his .005 gap was too big when he didn't even know if his own gap was ok.

Ben knows a little more about the Ecotec than most of the people on this site and if he has his clearance at .005 there's a reason for it. It's obviously been working for him.

He said the .005 seemed too large after getting off the phone with Wiseco and confirming that his own were okay. I'm sure Ben knows everything about the Ecotec, but no need for him to be a smartass when someone mentions a conflict of spec vs. actual, rather than explaining why his is so wide.

I'm sure Ben knew it was large after reading the spec from them in the directions.
Heck I believe mine was set at .003 to be safe but I forgot to ask.

I can completely understand him getting a little perturbed. It gets annoying real fast when people who don't know tell you your doing things wrong. I used to get it all the time. People telling me I was doing things wrong with my car by not building the engine first. It's a good thing they knew what I was doing better than I did though.

Listen man, I have spent around 4k in the past month on my motor alone. I was trying to see what people were getting for these clearances. I am pretty new to the j-body crowd, but I love the @!#$ out of my car.
