Deeper Intake
Thursday, October 16, 2008 9:09 AM
hey there, i got a 00 sunfire, with full cold air intake..
this 1 to be exact..

it sounds good, but nothing compared to civics and accents.. i want it to sound deeper.. is there a method to change or alter the intake manifold to make my intake sound deeper, other cars running short ram air intakes sounds better then mine.. and i dont know why.. I really want a deep sounding intake not a high sounding 1.

im not talking about exhaust.. i dont care, i got headers and exhaust, thats not the problem..

please tell me if there is anything i can do, it presently is like 3" and runs just inside the drivers fender.. should i extend it ?

thanks for any help

the problem is the engine, not the intake.

twin cams have the cool deep sound.
The only way to solve your problem is to swap your engine to a 2.4 or an ecotec

thanks budd, i really been considering doing an ecotec swap.. i really neeeeeeed more power.. and i think that would do it, how hard and how much fabrication do i need to complete the swap ????

would it be easier for a 2.4L non eco GT motor in ??

motor
transmission
mounts?
ecu?
axels ?
gauges?

theres prolly a 100 posts on this, maybe point me to the best 1 ?

thanks again.

I belive you would have more power with the 2.2 eco tech than the 2.4.

Re: Deeper Intake

there is also more aftermarket support for that platform.

if you are going to do a swap.....do an eco swap.

if you have an 00, all 3 motors slide into therew/ very little modification.

All that work just to get a deeper sounding intake?! ahah, My intake sounds really deep on my car and its a 95 2.2L.

you will want to get most of that from the donor car. The trans is the same model, but has a different bell housing per motor (getrag f23), axles SHOULD be the same as the tranny mounts in the same location. You will need the computer to run the engine, but the guages and other BCM controlled devises will work fine.

Trans mounts and lower dog bone mount are the same between all I believe. The upper motor mount will be different.

really? thats wiered . i had an intake on my old 2.2 ohv and it sounded crap. haha .. but my 2.4 doesnt even have an intake, just the "bong" removed and its way deeper. im thinking you need to hear what 2.4 sounds like lol jk bro. but 2.2 sounding deep is funny to me.

well i dont get why 1.5L SOHC NON vtec civics intakes sound soo sick.. but my 2.2 with a REAL intake sounds not nearly as good.. pisses me right off..

An intake will not make your car's engine sound deeper. It'll just eliminate the baffling that muffles the "Moan" the throttle-body makes when it's opened under load, making it more previlant. Now, changing the exhaust parts on the other hand...

It also has A LOT to do with the intake manifold as well, long runners and a big plenum can make a very very joyful acceleration noise .

this is true. Back in the OHV days in the skwirl, it made a decent grunt under WOT with just an intake

my 2004 DD with my rksport intake on the otherhand makes a VERY nice growl at WOT
I hear it pretty clearly since I don't have any exhaust work done.. I have to admit it sounds pretty sweet.

whats long runners and a big plenum ?? lol sorry if that sounds dumb. can you get a bigger intake manifold , or throttle body for a 2000 sunfire 2.2 ?

thanks for any help, abreviations, and words like plenum i have no idea of and dont have time to google. thanks again.

you dont have time to google. but you have time to sit here, and wait for a reply for a post? i think to lazy is more like it.

runners and the plenum are parts of the intake manifold.

And the only aftermarket that seems to exist for LN2 intake manifolds is Hogan, which is custom made from sheetmetal (like alot of N/A & F/I Pro machines run at the strip) and costly.

you better find some more time to google, or pick up some car magazines or a book at the library. This is elementary stuff. The newbie forum is a good place to start too.

You might want to stop there because with a F$F quote in your profile, dream car is a 350Z, and comparing your intake sound to a Civic.......some might want to pull out the "R" word.

Re: Deeper Intake

My intake sounds pretty deep, it growls in the low R's and screams for mercy at red line (we moved my red line to 6500, I usually shift at around 63). This is an OHV, with all my listed mods however, that might make some difference

Matt: Ahve you listed your buid-up in the thead titled "Build a better LN2" yet? If not, such an addition will be welcomed there, as will all LN2 build-ups done by those who've rolled-up their sleeves & delved into one, and had it come out with much success as a result.

well personally i dont think my 2200 sfi is worth putting any more money into.. ill try the header and exhaust i have for it, but its looking towards an eco swap..

im just tired of sucked out f'ing cars.. i wish i hadnt sold my malibu.. that was sick.. but judging by the easy swap guide on here, i just might have to do it.

thanks for the help guys..
