What makes a turbo muffler a "turbo muffler"? Im going to redo the exhaust on the GTZ and I've been told to use one.

Here is a pic of one off ebay

lol^^ that stang actually looks like it will be sweet if he finishes it.

Anyways..i think a turbo muffler is typically just a quieter muffler.. i had one on my cav a while ago, sounded pretty good but almost stock.

I believe the term "turbo muffler" was first coined in 1962 when the turbocharged Corvair Spyder was introduced. A big deal was made in the motoring press over the muffler used as it was designed specifically for that application and it was short, compact, had a 2 1/2' inlet, outlet and internal passages. It was heralded as a breakthrough design as it provided the sufficient sound reduction of a conventional muffler with little back pressure and was quickly adopted by hot rodders as a replacement for the lengthy glasspacks then thought to be the most efficient. Overnight, Chevrolet sold them as fast as they could stock them and aftermarket manufacturers began to turn them out in large numbers. Through the years, the term has been associated with large passage, low restriction mufflers now offered by many manufacturers. But, I'm old enough to remember it's roots.

(By the way, the Corvair Spyder wasn't the first GM mass-produced car with a turbocharger as the Oldsmobile (Cutlass) Jetfire preceeded it by a couple of months. The Jetfire had a 215 CI aluminum V8 with 10.5 to 1 compression and a (crude) water-injection system to help the engine survive that compression. It was only built for two years and is highly collectable today. But, it didn't get the turbo muffler.)

A turbo muffler is a style of muffler that is used on turbo rides, it allows higher flow less noise reduction due to the turbocharger its self muffling the sound some what durring spooling. Hence the name turbo muffler. One key part to note is they almost never have any type of packaging (fiberglass, steel wool). On N/A applications they are used to reach a higher flow and a louder profile , without having to use glasspack style mufflers.
On a scale from 1 to 10 noise wise these type range about a 6-7.
Glass packs are about 8
and no muffler or cat is a 10

http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f89/so...r-info-411771/ a turbo mufflere has a straight type pipe w/perforated holes.it's the best flowing for a turbo. check this out you won't believe the results and the highest flowing muffler.

Thats badass Tinkles! lol

Turbo mufflers are just reffered to because of the packing and are cased mufflers opposed to welded. Much quieter but still flow pretty much the same as a straight through muffler would.

They flow better than stock and with a nice resonator they have a nice deep tone.

Good thats what I was wishing to hear. I refused to see and hear my GTZ with a fart can.

Well here are the plans for the exhaust:

2.5 piping all the way keep in mind.....
Should I put my modified OBX header from my Alero on the GTZ?
2.5 Hi flow thrush cat
I was thinking of getting a 3.0 muffler.....does the internal pipes measure 3.0 as well?
Then run the tips to the side near the rear tire.

I think if you modified a pacecetter header it would. I would almost be willing to bet the header on my car does...

I modified an LSJ header to fit my 086...1 3/4 primaries. I doubt any manifold could outflow that. I bet the regular pacesetter atleast would keep up with the HO manifold if not pass it in flow.
