Instead of looking through a hundred million articles im wondering if someone can just answer this? I'm not asking HOW to disable the speed governer, only that if you do, if it makes it illegal for street? Next year i'm hopin to race on tuesdays at o'reilly raceway in brownsburg, and one of the rules is, it MUST be street legal. Just wondering about this.
It depends on your local laws. We here in FL dont have much to worry about as far as "Street Legal". The worst I have seen was for a loud exhaust on a car, regardless of how loud Harley's are. You really need to google state laws
Here in MD technically any modification is not street legal, although the only things the cops get on us about is loud exhaust. Since removing the governer involves reprogramming the ecu I dnt believe they could say much or proove much as to whether it is street legal or not.
In FL it is the same way. Basicly in a nut shell the law down here states " Anything that modifies the sound of the vehicle in any way shape or form is not street legal" Thats why pretty much everything you by says for off road use only.
you won't be going nearly fast enough to have any use of removing the governor. so why would you? and you can't "remove" it per say. the best you can do is increase it to a higher number.
is this an oval track or a street course?

My question is do you really think you are going to make it up to the speed limiter? If so, please explain.....

but since that wasnt really your question, the only way they would know that it was modded is if you went above 108. As far as I know the speed governor is in place because from the factory that is what the speed rating of the tires is, there isnt a law that states that a car can only go so fast...that im aware of. But I also think I heard somewhere that if you do mess with the speed governor that it basically reduces any value of your car to 0.

I do not totally agree with the fact that if you mod your car to go that fast you are going to know how to remove/disable whatever the speed limiter.
When you have Hahn selling turbo kits, and I have seen a stock ecotec with stock clutch trap 113mph. All you have to do really is bolt on a kit.
also seeing as how kids these days think they can buy a turbo and be fast, but does not mean they know about tuning, or anything else.
I would like to know what the OP is planning for mods to get to those kind of speeds.

I really don't know why everyone's jumped his sh!t for asking - he specifically said he wasn't asking how to do it (I'm guessing he either knows how to or knows someone who can), he's asking whether it'd still be considered street legal if he did. I agree with everyone who's said that he wouldn't reach the limiter on a racetrack with his current setup, but if you read his profile and take everything into account, he DOES say he's planning to do a turbo and cam and such in the future. Let's say he does - is it impossible that he'd reach ~110 on a racetrack then? I've never done any track racing but I do know it'd certainly suck to be tearing ass down the straightaway and bump off the limiter and have someone pass you at the finish line because of that. Likely? Probably not. Possible? Who knows.
Of course, putting a turbo on the car would make it non-street legal itself wouldn't it? Technically? Because it's going to mess with emissions equipment and all. But would just removing the limiter (or raising it to a speed he'd never reach) make the car not street legal? I would say that if done with HPTuners, the car would remain street legal.
An easy way to find out (and I'm not really kidding) - go ask a cop. Seriously. Say "I'm planning to race this car on a track, NOT ON THE STREET, but it has to remain 'street legal.' I'm wondering, if I were to remove the speed limiter, would it still technically be street legal?" Now not all of them know the laws that well (I've run into 2 who didn't know the laws in Ohio regarding exhaust and other modifications) but it'd be interesting to see what they'd say. They'll probably say something like "Well the only illegal thing about it would be if I caught you going 120 mph - that's illegal regardless of what you did with the limiter. But for that matter, 108 would be pretty illegal too." The laws seem to mostly involve things like exhaust noise and tampering with emissions equipment, or lights (headlights, signal lights, taillights, neons).
Asking a cop will do nothing but bring attention to yourself, and let them know that you are tampering with equipment. Just do it and keep your mouth shut! They don't go around looking for sh!t like this anyway.....

How is asking the a cop going to tell you if the track considred the car street legal? You need to check the rules of that track for that class. Damn!

keep in mind that street legal is a loose term when it comes to drag racing on a 1/4 mile strip. my home track says "lincense, inspected and thru the mufflers" for a car or truck to be in a street legal class. but half the time they dont even check. and i doubt any track would check if you disabled your speed limiter or not. after all they are track tech guys, not your local state inspection people
