On my 94 2.2 I want to shave the head. But will I be gaining compression even though the combustion chamber is in the top of the piston (dished) .Also does anybody Know a good procedure in checking how much clearance I will Have with the valve open. Thanks in advance
for clearance checking get some sort of clay, play dough or otherwise like substance and flatten it out over the top of you're piston. then install head etc, turn engine over. pull head back off and measure how far the clay was crushed.

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
Am I really gaining any compression with the combustion chamber being in the piston rather than the head?

What ??? LMAO
The combustion chamber is in the piston???
The combustion chamber is all of the area between the piston and head ...
When the piston comes up on the compression stroke it will compress the air in the Cylinder untill the EXT valve opens.
So the head is part of the compression chamber..
And yes you will increase the compression shaving the head unless you use a thicker head gasket
If you need to keep the same compression you can .. If the shop takes off .20K you can get a .20K thicker head gasket.
