So I called the local junk yard to see if they had any 2.3 quad 4's and it appears they do. My thing is I know I need the exhaust cam tower but not entirely sure what I should be getting. I have been looking for some diagrams of the engine and called gm to see if they had a picture of the engine to try and figure out what exactly I was looking for but they weren't able to find one. So I guess I'm kinda looking for a picture of what I should be looking for. I did find a picture online of a motor and wonder if it shows what exactly I need:
Just wonder if this picture shows what I need. I'm thinking the tower will just unbolt from the head and then I will have what I need. If someone can help me out I'd appreciate it.
The 2.3 tower has an oil port on the end, like the stock 2.4 INTAKE tower.
^^^ yup. other than that its pretty hard to tell without opening it up. the bores will be larger, you should be able to actually see the difference.
and yes, the tower consists of the bottom section that has the 'bores' and the cap. thats all you need.

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
The bolts easy enough to get out with just some normal handtools or are the bolts torqued pretty good. Looks like a 12mm wrench or something? Its at a you-pick junk yard so I'll have to take it off the car.
When the bolts are taken out will the cam tower be two pieces or is it just one? Kinda looks like in the picture that they may be 2 parts to the tower (splits in the middle)
actually, they are a 13mm bolt head. and very easy to remove. a simple ratchet is just fine.
they do seperate but you dont need to unless you dont want the cam...
there are little tabs that are on the bottom section, if you look at them there is a threaded hole right above them on the cap, just screw one of the bolts down on two sides of the tower and it will lift the cap off.
to get the whole works off the engine you are going to need to pull the timing chain cover off (or bend away hehe) and take timing chain and gear off. then you gain access to the 4 bolts that hold the cam tower to the timing chain housing.
its very easy if you do not care about the housing or cover. just beat it down with a hammer LOL

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
I don't need the cams just the tower...I'm gonna go look at it and see if I can do anything with it. In the pic I posted there are 6 headbolts there, are those the ones I have to take off to get the cam tower off?
In that pic there are SEVEN CAM tower bolts(not head bolts, those are underneath the cams) you have to take off. Like Brad said 13mm socket and wrench. There are 4 10mm cam gear bolts that will need to be taken off as well that are in the timing chain housing.

well lol yeah that and the engine mount, timing chain housing and fuel pressure regulator all give it away as well.
sorry matthew

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
there is another car there with the 2.3 as well maybe I'll snap some pictures tomorrow and see if its the right one..I was under the impression that any 2.3 exhaust cam tower would work, guess not....well I only worked at it for 3 hours so hey >:o but I was heading back tomorrow at 8 am to finish up so I'm glad I found out now...so what year 2.3 am I looking for?

you want any quad 4 exhaust tower from 88-94. the older ones will be different looking, odds are you wont find any but if you do they are smoothed looking. by older i mean 88-89. 90-94 is for SURE what you are looking for.
the 95 quad is pretty much exactly like the LD9. its got 33mm lifters...

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
damn...just my luck...I'll go back tomorrow and take a peak and try and find something pre-95...maybe I can find a picture of what its supposed to look like...well I guess now I know what its not supposed to look like so if its different I should be good. Are the 2.3 pre-95 in a grand am as well?
yup. tons of grand ams got quads.
just be sure to check for that oil sender. if in intake cam its a 95 quad. if exhaust cam its the one you want...

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
Get the 95 "secrect" intake cam from the 95 quad, and sell it. I'm sure someone would want it.

That's the one you want. They made a Single Overhead Cam model also.
You might want to grab the intake manifold also, hard to tell from the pic's but maybe a HO model...

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
I'll try and get some pics of the manifold to see if its the HO one....now if I can find that car again, there were rows and rows of GM cars
Its not.

man stop screwing around. just take a screw driver and a hammer and break the links of the chain apart.
its a junk yard, no body cares.

I must confess... I feel like a monster!
Those 4 bolts under the cam sprocket are hard to get at....I'm not sure if I could bend it back enough to get the 10mm wrench in there...like I said I ran out of time to so anymore...once the chain is off the sprocket comes off fairly easy and then hopefully I can get the four bolts out without stripping it. I'll finish it monday.
So what about the intake manifold, any good to use?
