Wider would be the most help, less sidewall on the tire would help some too.. not too little though.

Exactly, and to be honest a 16 inch wheel w/ an autocross tire will benefit you the most
go 15s and get a fat autocross tire, more sidewall and the tire will have a stiffer sidewall which equals less flex and more grip

<---Wow, lots of poor information in this thread. Autocross tires are not a viable street solution. Why would recommend a tire to someone that only lasts 10,000 miles or so? Bad idea.
You can add a rear sway bar to help balance the car out. It is probably the cheapest solution-- $150
If you had the money I would recommend a mild spring drop and nicer struts (KYB AGX's or something similar). This will make the care more neutral and you can adjust the strut settings in the front and rear to get the car to your desired handling. This would run you close to $500 though.
when i said autocross tire i meant something like the Falken Azenis RT615, its got nice life and great grip in cornering and such, i know ive had that and the older RT215 and they lasted me quite awhile, i didnt mean a strictly autocross tire like the Victoracer/V700/Advan tires for example.
Typical J-body.org advice....
A rear sway bar will make the car handle better than 2 Azenis' in the front and street tires in the rear. Azenis were not designed to be a daily driving tire. I seriously doubt you get over 10-15,000 miles on a set considering they are good for 1-2 autocrosses at most. Not to mention it would look stupid to have tires that don't match.
A rear sway bar is still the cheapest and best solution.
~ Autocross seaons not autocrosses
As mentioned, a rear swaybar is probably the quickest and easiest way to reduce the tendency for the car to understeer, but by getting stickier tires (a good set of performance summer tires) the car will hold on to the road better before losing grip and understeering.
It will still understeer when you break loose, but you won't break loose as early.
If your goal is to corner faster, I think better tires will give you more than the rear sway bar, but if you're looking to tune the behaviour of the car then the sway bar is a good first step.
Hell, get the sway bar regardless. They're cheap and you'll like it.
i never told the kid to just get 2 tires.....the main point of my post was to get everyone in here suggesting bigger rims w/ a tire that has a smaller sidewall to stop thinking like that. Bigger rims will not do anything, expecially seeing that a majority of the people here who get bigger rims get the cheapest thing they can find which normally means a heavy ass rim and a really @!#$ty tire.
i think i had about 30,000 miles on a set of azenis 215's , and alot of drag strip use
great tires
