Master Cylinder YES I SEARCHED!
Friday, November 21, 2008 8:22 AM
I am still looking for an answer on what aftermarket master cylinder people are running with their upgraded brakes. Mine is begining to fail. I know everyone says you dont neet to upgrade it. I have searched and found one guy running an SSBC MC but no part number in the thread. I emailed both wilwood and ssbc and they both said that they dont have any master cylinders for my vehicle.
Any other ideas?

the masters are the same as most GM ones.

they share the same bolt pattern to the booster.

You can use an N body MC for a cheap upgrade. You would have to re-plumb for a split diagonal system though.

The Wilwood should bolt up, though you may need line adaptors and /or new hard lines to goto either the ABS module (on 2K+ Delphi ABS) or the system w/o the ABS. For those with the '99 & older Delco ABS (one piece ABS hydraulic unit) you can only replce the whole module, doing away with the ABS. When doing away with the ABS, you'll need proportioning valves, to get the rear braking balance you want.

The stock J-Body MC bore is 7/8". Going to larger bore MC will give you quicker application of the brakes (less pedal travel) and a firmer pedal.

yes you will need adapters, or flare on new ends into the master, but a wilwood or SSBC master made for a chevy will work. They bolt directly onto the booster.

I know the N body is a 1" bore. IIRC, the W body is also.

So I have to replace my master cylinder. I have completely stock brakes. Soon to have stainless lines.

My question is, what MC do I need? I'm assuming the 1 1/8" bore would give me a fimer pedal with less travel. I eventually want to go big brake 6 pot up front and discs in back. Will this big of a bore create issues in driving with stock system? Also, how hard is it to delete abs and is it a bad idea?

You might have some problems modulating the brakes with a MC that large, with the stock system.

With an '03, you would have the Delphi ABS, all you should need to do is remove the ABS unit, connect the brake lines to the MC. A proportioning valve will probably be needed for the rears of the stock system. I wouldn't recommend deleting the ABS, if this is a street driven car, too many liability and safty issues. If this is to be a track only car, then go ahead and remove it.

Check out DaFlyinSkwirl/PJ's LS61 thread, he did the MC swap earlier in the thread.

Oh ok. It's a street car and I love the twisties so modulation is an important thing... so should I go stock bore or 1" like the N-Body MC? Only MC's I can find on eBay are 1.125".

So with this MC and ABS, the primary goes to the ABS or are there two lines going to the modulator? I can't recall and I don't have it in front of me. :/

Regardless, with this and SS lines I should notice an improvement.
