Anyways, when i bought the car, it had a panasonic cd player about 10 years old. Naturally it doesnt play cd-r/rw not to mention MP3's. I've been putting it off and putting it off, but now since i shaved the antenna, i need to get an MP3 deck in there.
The above mentioned deck is what i bought at Wal-Mart about 30 min ago. I will be installing this tomorrow, after install i may be replacing the stock speakers and maybe even the subs and dropping the bigger amp back there. Pretty excited about the XM ready feature, as this is what i wanted anyway. I'm a cheapskate and had bought this deck just for the trip to colorado. After looking at the features, I may not replace it till it takes a $hit, it looks like a fairly decent radio, and I paid about $85 after taxes.
Anyone had any experience with these? Good thing about walmart is, if it takes a crap on me within 90 days, i take it back and get a brand new one! I had a jensen deck that kept screwing up, after 3 of them, they finally gave me my money back... lol

ewwww. Take it back! Take it back!
Ok seriously.it's all about what works for you. I personally would never put a Walmart CD player in any car. It looks as if you're planning on upgrading pretty much all of the rest of the audio system, do you really want a weak deck sending a dirty signal to you're expensive amps and speakers/subs?
As far as the XM ready, I would bet that what that means is there's a plug to hook in an XM tuner, which you must purchase seperately and will probably run you around $100-200. Almost every hu out anymore is satallite ready, but all except for the really high end ones require a seperate tuner.
Like I said, might as well try it out. If you like it, sweet. If not take it back and get a higher quality hu. You don't really lose out on your money so don't worry if it's not good. Let us know how it works out though and good luck on your trip.

Just a slightly OT comment...I've NEVER had a cd player that won't play cd-r discs. I've been using cd-rs since before they were a common item (my first cd burner was $800).
Maybe with some of the crappier media thats out there now on older players, but I've used pretty much all my cd-r's in early 90's cd players, and the only thing that will not play cd-r's is first gen DVD players, and that is only because the lasers can't read that type of dye.

In that case i have a really nice Panasonic CD deck that plays CD-R/RW's for sale if your interested! LoL
j/k.... i dunnno... maybe the discs i use? I juss know that none of the ones i had burned for my girlfriend could play. Also my buddy juss bought a new Cavalier and his stock deck doesnt play CD-r/rw either? Either way, all my vehicles have MP3 decks in em anyways, i hate changing discs on an 8 hour road trip

So it was just a matter of time anyways.
Update on the deck.... it sounds really nice, plays the encoded discs no problem, fully functional EQ. Sounds like this is what I'll be using unless the components i put in bring out the crappiness thats hidden in it... if any? Money well spent.
I had to go get a different DIN spacer because this deck was a hair deeper than the panasonic and would not fit right, so it sticks out a bit farther but not noticable. I STILL havent lengthened my wires from the MMS door kit install, mainly cuz the @!#$ is in my girlfriends car and she is at work.
I had to take the dash out today to route the wires... not alotta space behind them decks. While it was out, i contemplated painting it, but i knew with little planning it would look halfassed, so i juss washed it with some vanilla shampoo.... yum smells good... lol looks nice again, dash back in, deck installed, now i wish melissa would get home with my stuff so my front speakers will work....

A lot of people seem to think that if their stereo won't play an mp3 Cd, it also won't play any burned discs, which usually isn't true, just thought I'd point it out.

I put a Durabrand CD player in my g/f's 88 Escort and she loves it.
Of course what was in there originally was from 1988, and it was a tapedeck.
The CD player isn't junk, to me, junk is something that isnt worth the money. And $50 for a CD player aint too shabby. Plus it's not like she has an entire system in the thing, she's running stock speakers all around and basically just wanted a CD player so she can listen to her CD's.
What's wrong with that?

Look around at like Best Buy or Circuit City and tell me if you can find a hu with all those features for $85. You get the quility you pay for. My suggestion is to take it back and do a little shopping around for a name brand.
Actually, wal-mart has started selling not so bad pioneer decks(i work there) and although the higest model we have on the floor is the 4700, we actually sell right up to the 7700mp (i just picked one up for cheap)
I work at walmart and wouldnt buy anything car audio related there. Its true that they are starting to get some better stuff in,but they're still nothing compared to the decks you can buy at electronic stores.
But if you want a good price and you dont need a name brand deck then its not a bad choice. As long as it does what you need it to,it doesnt matter where you get it.
Hell....i couldnt beat my pionner 7700 for cost......I'll pay that anyday over the $250 at bestbuy
get an ALPINE they are the best
i wish i would have got one i got a sony its the black aluminum one... just get an alpine
thye let you set it so the soud gets to you at the same time to all the speakers really kewl

i love panasonic decks they're the best
TAke the walmart special back. If you are on a tight budget, get a low modes pioneer. Pioneer decks are unbeatable for the price, in my humble opinion. I think their mp3 decks start at $119, at least that's the price I can remember. The higher end sony's are ok, but not worth the money. Panasonic is right about where pioneers are, but I've had a few problems with them that make me prefer pioneers. If you can afford it, I say go with an alpine, but that's because I picked one up at work and am extremely happy with it.
